Brookstock XXI is in the books.
The long-running hometown music festival had a hiccup, but it did not negatively affect attendance. More than 160 people attended the Saturday night slate of concerts at The Brookhaven Building.
Bryan Batson, lead singer and rhythm guitarist of The Laughter of Ruin — one of the original Brookstock bands — was sick with COVID. Batson and his band were set to be the headliners, performing 15 songs and participating in the traditional jam session from 10:30 p.m. until midnight. To compensate for their absence, the band plans to play on the Railroad Park Stage this fall at a date to be announced later.
Tyler Bridge, this year’s organizer, had to alter the schedule. Four Way Stop, a local powerhouse of young talent, kicked off the evening in high gear, providing rousing covers of such classic rock hits as “Come Together,” “Crossroads,” “Superstition” and “Whole Lotta Love.” They also showcased a rocking original, “Wicked Woman.”
Mike J. Case took the stage next, performing original and parody songs, occasionally accompanied by guitarist and vocalist Ricky Brown.
The music portion of the festival was rounded out with performances from Brown and The Bridge Band, perennial Brookhaven and Brookstock favorites.
A surprise visit came from Brookstock founder Don Jacobs, who arrived via wheelchair to a standing ovation from attendees and performers. Jacobs suffered a stroke in 2021, causing him to miss Brookstock XX that year. Since then, he has been in rehab at St. Catherine’s Village in Madison.
Jacobs had only left the assisted living center a few times with family since the stroke.
“Being at Brookstock was a huge morale booster for Don,” said friend Bill Perkins. “Brookstock had been ‘his baby’ for over 20 years. It meant the world for him to be there Saturday.”
Jacobs had the honor of announcing the Brookstock XXI Queen, Betty Ann Perkins. Several past queens were on hand to celebrate with the newly-crowned queen and enjoy the party.
