County man killed in early a.m. accident

Lincoln County officials are trying to determine the cause of aone-vehicle accident that left a county man dead early Saturdaymorning.

Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said Jason C. Lofton, 37,of 2135 Rowlo Trail, had hit a tree at the intersection of LinfrankDrive and Jordan Drive sometime before the call came in at 1:06a.m. Saturday.

“When our officers got there, they found the driver deceased,”he said. “It appears he went off the road and hit a tree.”

Lincoln County Coroner Clay McMorris said Lofton’s vehicle hadhit a tree at what is actually a T-shaped spot in the road.

“He missed that and went straight into that tree,” McMorrissaid, adding that the wreck could have been caused by lack ofvisibility. “But I don’t know. I just know that he hit the woodsright there.”

Rushing said his department is investigating the accidentscene.

“Our reconstructionists will take a look at it,” he said. “It’sundetermined as to whether the weather had any impact, and therecould be other circumstances.”

Lofton’s body has been sent to the Mississippi State Crime Labfor autopsy. His funeral arrangements are being handled byRiverwood Family Funeral Services and they are incomplete.
