Arts school to host students, parents Saturday

Tenth graders and their parents interested in learning moreabout the unique opportunities available at Mississippi School ofthe Arts can have questions answered during a special open houseSaturday.

The event will begin at Lampton Auditorium at 1 p.m., whenparents and students can get acquainted with the school and itsfaculty.

“People can view the model and talk with the staff one-on-one,”said Jennifer Jackson, public relations director for MSA.

Due to an ongoing renovation project of the Whitworth Collegecampus, visitors are not allowed to walk around the grounds.However, tours of Brookhaven will be available for out-of-townvisitors.

“It will give them a feel of Brookhaven and a better idea of thelocation,” said Jackson.

A presentation about the school for talented high school juniorsand seniors from across the state will start at 2 p.m. The45-minute presentation will be followed by a question and answersession.

Reservations are required for the open house. Parents orstudents may sign up for the event by calling 823-9256.

Jackson encourages all local students with an interest in finearts to also send in an application for enrollment in MSA, which isscheduled to begin classes in August.

“We will have residential students and commuting students, sostudents in this area will have a unique opportunity to live athome and attend school by commuting,” she said.

Applications can be picked up at the school and are due in by 3p.m., Feb. 14. The requirements for applying to the school will beone of the topics discussed during the open house.

The Saturday event is the second open house sponsored by theschool. More than 75 people from around the state attended thefirst open house in December.

“We had local students, and we had people from as far away asBiloxi, all the way up to Oxford,” said Jackson. “It went verywell. It turned out to be a great way to answer questions potentialstudents and parents have about the school.”
