School officials say they are well on their way to beingprepared for the new school year while students are still enjoyingtheir summer break.

Students, however, will soon have to forego their relaxingsummer routines and register for their return to school. Most areaschools have scheduled students to return during the first week ofAugust.

Enrollment in most districts is expected to remain relativelyunchanged from last year, school superintendents say.

“Enrollment should be about the same,” said James Tillman,interim superintendent for the Brookhaven School District. “We’relikely to enroll about 3,200 students.”

Dr. Miller Hammill, headmaster at Brookhaven Academy, agreed.”It looks like our enrollment will be pretty much what it was lastyear – around 472 students.”

Students returning to a district from last year have generallyalready enrolled for the next school year at public schools,superintendents said. Registration for the next school year isgenerally held at the end of the previous year.

However, high school registration is more complex. Although moststudents registered for classes at the end of the previous year,they must attend a registration day in order to pick up their classschedules.

Lincoln County School District and Wesson Attendance Centeroffer the earliest registration period. Parents can begin enrollingnew students there after July 19.

Students can register at Brookhaven School District, LawrenceCounty School District and Brookhaven Academy the week schoolstarts.

Students at all schools will begin school the first week ofAugust.
