Jackson Senators put broom on Brakemen

The Brookhaven Brakemen produced a pair of late rallies but bothof them fell short Sunday afternoon as the Jackson Senators swept asweat-soaked twinbill on Brookhaven Academy’s diamond. Jackson tookthe opener 2-1 and the nightcap 5-3.

Brookhaven (3-3, 11-14) resumes Cotton State League action onTuesday, hosting Hattiesburg. The Brakemen are at PoplarvilleWednesday and visit Hattiesburg Friday. They play at Pearl Saturdayand host Clinton Sunday.

Pitcher Marshall Watts, an Auburn product, went the distance. Hegave up 1 run on 4 hits, struck out 2 and walked 2.

Lance Deville started on the mound for Brookhaven and went 5innings. He gave up 1 unearned run on 2 hits, fanned 6 and did notissue a base on balls.

Leggett replaced Deville in the sixth. He gave up 2 hits and 1earned run. He walked 1 batter.

Centerfielder Logan Owens tripled for Jackson in the sixth. Hedrove in Josh Hunter who had walked.

Third baseman Chris Snow doubled and singled for theSenators.

First baseman Seth Lofton led Brookhaven with 2 singles. JacobBlakeney and Cayce Wallace also hit safely.

Blakeney led off the seventh with a single. He went to second ona wild pitch and advanced to third on a Jeb Lee ground out. VanceWindom drove in Blakeney with a grounder to shortstop.

Winning pitcher Ted Orcutt went the distance. The slendersouthpaw from Crowder (Mo.) Junior College gave up 5 hits, 3 runs,struck out 4 and walked 2.

Michael Edwards went the first 6 innings and absorbed the loss.He gave up 5 runs on 9 hits, striking out 6 and walking 2.

Lofton hurled the final frame for Brookhaven.

Designated hitter Brett Byrd hit a 3-run homer for Jackson inthe first inning. Byrd, a Delta State product, finished with 3hits. Catcher Sid Naron had 2 hits and rightfielder Bryan Harveyhad 2 hits for Jackson.

Third baseman Brandon Hubbard singled and doubled forBrookhaven. The Brakemen got singles from Wallace, Windom andJeffrey Waycaster.

The Brakemen scored twice in the bottom of the sixth. Wallaceled off with a single. Hubbard followed with a double andWaycaster’s grounder plated Wallace. Josh Thoms hit a grounder toshort which scored Hubbard. Thoms had 2 RBI in the game.
