Co-Lin falls to Gulf Coast

PERKINSTON — The Co-Lin Lady Wolves dropped a South Divisionsoftball double header to the defending state and regional champGulf Coast Lady Bulldogs Thursday afternoon.

Gulf Coast won the opener 4-1 and the final 1-0.

The Lady Wolves fell to 19-10 with the losses. Co-Lin visitsPearl River Saturday for another division doubleheader, beginningat 1 p.m.

Gulf Coast 4, Co-Lin 1

Co-Lin took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Right centerfielderEmily Langley tripled to right center then scored on Ashley Sykes’ground out to second.

Kayla Crochet held Gulf Coast scoreless until the fifth. A leadoff walks, a bunt single and a single to center tied the score.Becca Bailey relieved Crochet on the mound and gave up aquestionable triple down the right field line.

“Gulf Coast made the most of their opportunities and we didn’t,”said Co-Lin head coach Allen Kent. “We left four runners stranded.Kayla and Bailey threw well enough to normally keep ups in thegame. Crochet took the loss, striking out five with three hits andthree earned runs. Bailey allowed one hit and one run.

Meleah Brown had Co-Lin’s only other hit. Devon Welch walkedtwice.

Gulf Coast 1, CO-Lin 0

Gulf Coast scratched an unearned run in the fourth. The LadyBulldogs took advantage of a dropped fly ball, a wild pitch and abloop base hit.

Co-Lin’s only hits were a single each by Crochet and Bailey.Pinch runner Amber Bowman sustained an ankle injury and isquestionable.

“We really made (Suzanna) Teague look good today, popping uptwelve times,” said Kent. “We beat her at our place, pounding outnine hits in six innings.

“We really had some poor at bats, not putting much pressure ontheir defense,” added Kent.

Co-Lin leads Pearl River by one game for second place in theSouth.

“I still believe us and the Gulf Coast are the top two teams inthe state,” added Kent. “We played them hard, but just came upshort. They only lost two starters from last year’s squad.”
