Brookhaven and Bogue Chitto will be well represented in Monday’s Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star Basketball Games. In the 6 p.m. opener at Mississippi College’s A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton, Coach Christi Terrell and guard Mattie Avants will represent Bogue Chitto on the South Girls Team.

At 7:30 p.m. Coach Preston Wilson and forward Fred Trevillion will represent Brookhaven on the South boys squad. Longtime MAC supporter Mississippi Sports Medicine is sponsoring the games for the 13th consecutive year.

Basketball fans can arrive early to witness the finals of the 3-point shooting, free throw shooting and slam-dunk contests at 5 p.m., prior to the girls game. Tickets are $5 each for all ages and are good for both games.

Admission is free for active MAC members, along with their spouses and children.

Terrell, fresh from leading her Lady Cats to the Class 1A State Tournament for a second straight year, said she is looking forward to the all-star experience. The coaches report today at 11:30 a.m. and the players arrive at 12:30 p.m. Two practices are scheduled today.

“Our team has been going to basketball camps in June,” said Terrell. “Mattie is ready to play.”

Terrell said her Lady Cats participated in camps at Jackson Academy and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. “We played a lot of bigger schools that we don’t usually play. That should help us next season.”

Both Terrell and Avants were honored at the conclusion of the 2012-13 campaign. Terrell was named The Daily Leader’s All-Lincoln County Co-Coach of the Year and Avants was named to the DL Dream Team. Avants, a 5-foot-7 rising senior, averaged 10 points and 3 rebounds per game.

“Mattie shot the ball really well for us at the end of the season,” said Terrell, whose team finished 27-8. “She is a hard worker and she plays good defense.”

Avants played in the MAC All-Star Fastpitch Softball Games last month. She is a standout shortstop.

Avants said, “I’m looking forward to the game. It will be fun playing for Coach Terrell.”

Terrell will be coaching alongside Bruce Baker of Hinds AHS, a fierce rival in the Region 7-1A basketball race. They have the best player in the all-star game and in the Magnolia State, 6-foot sensation Victoria Vivans of Scott Central, an All-American selection last season. Other players from this area are Lineashia Palmer of Wilkinson County, Erica Harris of Hinds AHS and LaSha Haynes of Port Gibson.

Coaching the North girls are Veronica Helms of Winona and Shayne Linzy of Oxford.

All-Star Boys Action

Wilson will share the South coaching chores with Micoe Cotton of Moss Point. However, Cotton’s standout 6-5 forward, Devin Booker, will miss the game due to a prior commitment.

“We have a talented group of guards,” said Wilson. The South will count on 6-9 Oliver Black of Wingfield and 6-6 Howard Thomas of Brandon for scoring and rebounding strength inside.

The North boys are coached by Anthony Davis of Shaw and Michael Smith of Booneville.

Wilson said the 6-3 Trevillion has been splitting time with football and basketball this summer. He is projected to be Ole Brook’s starting quarterback. He received rave reviews as a wide receiver in last week’s KDMC Combine at Copiah Academy in Gallman.

“Fred plays hard on both ends of the court,” said Wilson. “With his athletic ability, he can make plays. He can get a basket when you need one.”

Trevillion earned All-County honors on the DL’s football and basketball teams. He averaged 13.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last season when the Panthers finished 9-17.

All-Star notes: This is the 59th annual boys game and the 49th annual girls game. In 2012, the North defeated the South girls 74-62, claiming a 27-21 series lead.

The South boys won their fourth straight game, beating the North 102-95 and extending their series lead to 37-21.
