BA wins state title

JACKSON -The Brookhaven Academy boys and girls tennis teamscaptured State AA Tournament Championships Wednesday at ParhamBridge Tennis Center.

“We are real excited,” said Brookhaven Academy tennis coachVelma Estess. “We are going to have a good time.”

Twelve BA players participated yesterday and the 10 winnersadvanced to today’s Academy Overall at the Ridgeland TennisCenter.

In boys action, Jerrod Rayborn won the No. 1 boys singles title.The team of Craig Smith and Jimmy Latham captured their secondstraight No. 1 doubles crown and the first-year duo of Collins Caseand Chris Hooper won the No. 2 doubles championship. Case had wonlast year with Jake Sessums.

In girls play, the No. 1 girls doubles title went to the duo ofJoey Sessums and Anna C. Moak. Capturing the No. 2 girls crown wasthe first-year tandem of Abby Day and Hannah Estess.

Brookhaven Academy’s No. 1 girls singles player Madeline Hallwas upset in the championship finals but still advances to today’sOverall.

The Cougar mixed duo of Ryan Canon and Katie Ryan was eliminatedin the semifinals.

According to Estess, the Smith-Latham team had received a firstround bye Thursday morning when the Jackson Prep team failed toshow.

“I am proud of them,” added Estess. “They have worked hard.”
