Nelda Shaw Furlow

Mrs. Nelda Shaw Furlow, 85, passed away at King’s DaughtersMedical Center on Feb. 19, 2009. Riverwood Family Funeral Serviceis in charge of her arrangements. Her funeral service will be heldon Feb. 23 at First United Methodist Church in Brookhaven at 2 p.m.with visitation starting before the service at 12:30 p.m.

Mrs. Furlow moved to Brookhaven to attend Whitworth Collegeafter graduating from her high school in San Antonio, Texas. Aftertwo years at Whitworth, she transferred to LSU, where she receiveda B.A. in Speech. She then returned to Whitworth to teach, and shemet and married Brookhaven native William L. Furlow after hereturned from service in World War II. The Furlows lived away fromBrookhaven for several years but returned in 1956, and for morethan half of a century, Mrs. Furlow considered Brookhaven herhometown.

Mrs. Furlow had a long involvement in civic activities. For 17years, she ran the Red Cross office in Lincoln County and tookgreat satisfaction in helping others, especially in facilitatingcommunications for local military personnel. She was active in theNational Association of Junior Auxiliaries and received theBrookhaven Chapter’s first Golden Crown Award in 1989. Among herother volunteer activities were reading to the blind overMississippi Public Broadcasting, teaching adults to read andtutoring elementary students in reading, something she did untilnear the end of her life.

Among her proudest accomplishments were helping found theBrookhaven Little Theatre. She directed and acted in plays, servedon the board of directors, and in 1990, she received its JohnLandress Award.

Preceding her in death were her husband, William Lowry Furlow;her parents, Albert Watson and Marion Sharp Shaw; her sister, EdnaLee Shaw; her brother, Albert W. Shaw; and her sister-in-law, HelenF. Scruggs.

Survivors include her three sons, William Albert Furlow and wifeDavilynn, of Natchez, Ransome Shaw Furlow, of Wesson, and AlbertBrown Furlow, of New York City, N.Y.; her daughter, Suellen Furlow,of Laurel; her grandchildren, Richard Bennett Furlow and RansomeCole Furlow; her great-granddaughter, Julia Marie Furlow; hernephews, Richard F. Scruggs and Brian Shaw; and her niece, VirginiaIshmael.

Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Children’s Home,P. O. Box 2589, Madison, MS 39130; the Brookhaven Little Theatre;or the Special Olympics.

Eunice Norris

Services for Eunice Norris, of Meadville, are 2 p.m. Monday,Feb. 23, at Meadville Baptist Church with burial in MidwayCemetery. The Rev. Kevin Griffin and Dr. Elmo Gabbert willofficiate. Franklin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Sunday from 5 until 9 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m.until 1:30 p.m. Both visitation services will be held at thefuneral home.

Mrs. Norris, 87, died Feb. 20, 2009, at her residence. She wasborn in Franklin County on Sept. 2, 1921, to Stanton Rollins Sr.and Docia Corban Norris.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Meadville BaptistChurch.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, EbbNorris; her daughter; and three grandchildren.

Survivors are her sons, George Norris and wife, Doreen, ofMeadville, Willie Norris and wife, Betty, of Roxie, and CharlesNorris and wife, Renate, of Ridgecrest, La.; her daughters, JerleneBoyte and husband, Leon, of Roxie, and Edith Seale and husband,Don, of Pineville, La.; her brother, Stanton Rollins Jr., ofMeadville; her sister, Jeffie Mae Norris, of Clinton, La.; 11grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and threegreat-great-grandchildren.

Joyce Lolene Smith

Services for Joyce Lolene Smith, of Brookhaven, are 3 p.m.Sunday, Feb. 22, at Brookhaven Funeral Home Chapel on Natchez Drivewith burial in Riverwood Memorial Park.

Visitation is Saturday from 5 until 9 p.m. at the funeralhome.

Mrs. Smith, 57, died Feb. 20, 2009, at her residence. She wasborn in Brownwood, Texas, on June 19, 1951, to Doyce Elmer Clecklerand Lula Fay Clark Cleckler.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of JesusChrist of Latter Day Saints Red Star Ward in the Loyd Starcommunity.

Preceding her in death were her parents.

Survivors are her husband, Charles Wayne Smith, of Brookhaven;Grady Charles Smith, Tony Wayne Smith and Ryan Jason Smith, all ofBrookhaven; his brothers, Ted Cleckler and Eddie Cleckler, both ofBrookhaven; and her 11 grandchildren.

Larry Wayne Thompson Jr.

Private memorial services for Larry Wayne Thompson Jr., ofMcComb and a former resident of Jackson and Hazlehurst, will beheld at a later date. Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home is in charge ofarrangements.

Mr. Thompson, 42, died Feb. 20, 2009, at his residence after alengthy illness. He was born on Dec. 31, 1966, to Larry W. ThompsonSr. and Dorothy Anne Blackmon.

He was a sales consultant in the furniture and clothingindustry.

Preceding him in death were his paternal grandparents, Seab andEvelyn Johnson Thompson; and his maternal grandparents, WilliamBailey Tull Sr. and Dorothy Pettit Tull.

Survivors are his mother, Dorothy Anne Blackmon, of McComb; hisfather and stepmother, Larry Wayne Thompson Sr. and Joyce, of BatonRouge, La.; his sisters, Laura Rebecca Thompson, of McComb, JaniceGerke, of Springfield, Mo., and Cheryl Thompson, of Baton Rouge;two uncles; and other relatives and friends.
