Loyd Star’s awesome ground game buries Enterprise

Sting Bowl 2003 proved to be a one-sided affair Friday night.The visiting Loyd Star Hornets used a massive running attack tooverwhelm the host Enterprise Yellow Jackets 48-14 at Harry L.Cole, Sr., Field and gain a measure of revenge in the process.

The Hornets, members of Region 6-2A, picked up 475 yards via therush to move to 2-0 on the season. Enterprise (Region 4-1A) fell to0-2.

“It was a big win for us,” said Loyd Star coach Sidney Wheatley.”We had a tough loss last year (a 19-12 Jackets win). Our kids wereexcited to play this one. We played pretty well on defense and wereoutstanding up front (on the offensive line).”

Loyd Star began the assault with 2:06 remaining in the firstquarter. Senior fullback Matthew Delaughter capped an 11-play,90-yard drive with a 31-yard run to paydirt. Justin Whatley addedthe first of six extra points for a 7-0 lead.

An Enterprise fumble on their own 15-yard line led to the nextHornet score. Josh Townsend recorded the first of his threetouchdowns in the game with an 11-yard run at the 0:37 mark of theperiod. Whatley’s PAT made the score 14-0 after the openingstanza.

The lead was extended to 21-0 with 8:59 to go in the first half.Townsend punched the ball in on a three-yard scamper and Whatleyagain hit the extra point.

The only scoring drive of the night for Enterprise came on thefollowing possession. Starting at their own 20-yard line, theJackets used nine plays and 56 rushing yards from Terrell May toreach the end zone. May took the ball in from the three-yard line.Scott Sasser provided the PAT to make the score 21-7 with 4:56remaining before intermission.

The Hornets put the game out of reach on their next drive. Aone-yard dive by Juron Collins and Whatley’s PAT with 0:46 secondsto play capped a nine-play drive to make the score 28-7 at thehalf.

Another Jacket fumble, on their own 35-yard line, opened thedoor for Loyd Star in the third quarter. Delaughter scored on asix-yard run with 8:25 to play. Whatley’s extra point stretched tolead to 35-7.

Enterprise scored its final points of the game on the ensuingkickoff. Taking the ball at his own two-yard line, senior DerrickClark outran all defenders for a 98-yard touchdown at the 8:09mark. Sasser hit the PAT for make the score 35-14 at the end of thethird quarter.

“I made up my mind that if they kicked it to me, I was gone (fora touchdown),” said Clark.

Loyd Star scored twice more in the final period. Townsend’sthird touchdown of the night, a 15-yard run, came with 6:02 toplay. Whatley added his final PAT for a 42-14 score.

Then, with 0:18 to play, reserve quarterback Kyle Woolleyrecorded a 23-yard touchdown.

“We just didn’t have anything go our way,” said Enterprise headcoach Scott Leggett. “They (the Hornets) killed us up front (on theoffensive line). We had our chances to turn it into a differentgame but didn’t. Non-region games are more of a learningexperience. It’ll help us get ready for region play. That’s whatcounts.”

Townsend led the Hornets’ ground game with 155 yards and threetouchdowns on 15 carries. Delaughter had 127 yards and two scoreson 20 carries while Collins rushed 13 times for 101 yards and atouchdown. Woolley added 48 yards and a touchdown.

“(We) couldn’t do it without the offensive line,” saidDelaughter. “But we can’t be satisfied with this win. We’ve got tokeep working hard.”

Loyd Star recorded 21 first downs, lost three fumbles and waswhistled for seven penalties for 65 yards. Whatley threw one passwhich was incomplete.

Defensively, Delaughter led the way with 18 tackles. WilliamHill and Michael Britt had 12 and 11 stops respectively. Townsendand Corey Charpentier both had a fumble recovery.

Enterprise was held to 119 total yards, all on the ground. Maytopped Jacket runners with 80 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.Jamaal Vaughn chipped in with 39 yards on seven carries.

The Jackets tallied eight first downs, lost three of fourfumbles and were penalized five times for 35 yards. They had twoincomplete passes. Josh Tanner punted four times for a 38.5average.

Vaughn led all Enterprise defenders with 19 tackles, includingone quarterback sack. Corey Smith added 11 tackles. Clark had ninetackles along with a fumble recovery. Will Sicard and Lane Nationsalso recovered a fumble apiece.

Both teams are on the road for their next game. The Hornetstravel to Meadville to face the Franklin County Bulldogs whileEnterprise goes cross-county to open region play against the WestLincoln Bears.
