Donovan Lorraine’s assimilation from southern Louisiana cultureto Lincoln County has been a major adjustment. However, football isa common bond and that helps him feel comfortable in his newenvironment.

Lorraine accounted for 12 tackles in Brookhaven Academy’simpressive 37-14 victory over Simpson County Academy last Friday.That effort has earned him The DAILY LEADER’s Defensive Player ofthe Week honor.

Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 175 pounds, Lorraine has become avital cog in BA’s march to a perfect 6-0 record this season. Hemade the move north just in time for the summer workouts.

BA head coach Herbert Davis said Lorraine is making steadyimprovement as the Cougars strive for a fourth consecutive District4-AA crown. Lorraine has seen duty at safety, middle linebacker andwide receiver.

“Donovan had his best defensive game,” said Davis. “He’s a goodathlete and plays aggressive football. He enjoys playing thegame.”

In the Aug. 21, season-opener, Lorraine was working at safety.”He has stepped up and done a great job for us at middlelinebacker,” said Davis. “He’s strong and quick. He might be theonly wide receiver who starts at middle linebacker in ourleague.”

Lorraine transferred from South Lafouche, a Class 5A publicschool located south of New Orleans in Galiano. His parents areDonald and Laura Lorraine. He has two older sisters who live inLouisiana and a younger brother, Luke, who is in the second gradeat BA.

The Cougars’ win over Simpson County was tempered by the newsdelivered by Lorraine’s father after the game. His grandmother haddied last Friday after a long battle with breast cancer.

“I had to adjust when I moved here,” said Lorraine. “I likegoing to a small school and I feel good playing football here.”

Against Simpson, Lorraine caught 6 passes from Chandler Rogersfor 125 yards. “I enjoy catching the ball and making yards,” saidLorraine, “but you get more fired up on defense.

“Linebacker is a lot of fun because there’s so much action. Youget to make a lot of plays.”

Lorraine said BA’s defensive line helped him make a lot oftackles. “Our D-Line causes a lot of commotion up front, so you canmake some plays.”

Working in the front line are Will Gatlin, Clint Stewart, BaileyHodge, Hunter Franklin, Hunter McCullough and Prentiss Smith.

Joining Lorraine at linebacker are Jamison Powell, Alan MichaelAllred and Eli Gatlin.

The BA secondary includes Jennings Mills, Bubba KeenE, TrippJolly, Mark Rushing, Jeff Rushing and Will Lucas.

In the weight room, Lorraine has maxed out at 225 pounds in thebench press and 300 pounds in the squat.

Lorraine admits to being a devoted follower of the LSU Tigers.His favorite food is crawfish.
