Child back home after accident

An 8-year-old child who was struck by a truck in front of thelibrary in downtown Brookhaven last Thursday afternoon is now home,according to family members.

Officer Louis Calcote, juvenile investigator with the BrookhavenPolice Department, said the girl had left her mother in front ofGregg’s Office Supply on Jackson St., and crossed the street to thelibrary just before 4:30 p.m. last Thursday. Calcote could notrelease the minor child’s name.

“According to witnesses, she came out from the library and justburst across the street,” said Calcote.

She was then struck by a 1981 GMC pick-up driven by James Hux,56.

“The driver just didn’t have enough time to stop. The mother wasacross the street and didn’t know the child had crossed to theother side,” said Calcote.

The driver of the truck was not at fault, Calcote said, and nocitations were issued in relation to the accident.

According to the police report, the child was treated at thescene and then transferred by ambulance to King’s Daughter MedicalCenter and then moved to Jackson. Calcote could not say whether thechild was taken by ambulance or by private vehicle to Jackson.

Sharon Jackson, the child’s mother, could not be reached forcomment.
