MONTICELLO – A grandmother accused of torturing herfour-month-old granddaughter to death was denied bond during aninitial hearing Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Mary P. Grandberry, 52, was denied bond by Judge Donnie Mullinsin the capital murder case, Lawrence County Sheriff Joel Thamessaid.

Grandberry is accused of torturing to death Daria K’MyaGrandberry, who was born March 19 and died of internal hemorrhagingJuly 21 at Marion General Hospital. Daria K’Mya was the daughter ofKeisha Grandberry of Monticello.

Mullins appointed Public Defender Bob Evans to defend MaryGrandberry. The case will be presented to the grand jury on Dec.1.

Mary Grandberry was arrested about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and chargedwith the killing, which has garnered attention statewide becausethe hemorrhaging allegedly was caused by molestation.

Doug Miller, assistant district attorney for the 15th JudicialCourt District, said Tuesday the killing was “probably the mosthorrendous death involving a child I’ve ever had to deal with.”

Miller has declined to comment on the nature of the infant’sinjuries or how they were caused until the case goes to trial, butThames has confirmed that molestation was part of the tortureallegedly inflicted on the child.

A single incident caused the injuries that killed the infant,Miller said, but he declined to comment on whether there were anyprior incidents involving the child.
