Jamboree action on tap

The Brookhaven Panther football team will get a preseason testThursday night when they visit Wayne County to participate in itsfootball jamboree. The games will be played under two 10-minutequarters format.

In football jamboree action Friday night, Loyd Star, Wesson,Hazlehurst, Franklin County and Lawrence County will hostjamborees. It will provide fans with a preview of the 2008 campaignwhich begins Aug. 29.

Brookhaven, coached by Tucker Peavey, meets defending Class 4Astate champion Laurel at 5 p.m. Laurel battles McComb at 5:45,Wayne County faces McComb at 6:30 and Brookhaven faces off againstWayne County at 7:30.

“We want to get our guys on the field against somebody else,”said Peavey. “You want to get rid of the early jitters. We justwant to get out there, compete and play hard.”

Loyd Star

Loyd Star, coached by Ryan Ross, hosts Bogue Chitto and WestLincoln in its jamboree. The first game begins at 6 Friday, withLoyd Star meeting Bogue Chitto. West Lincoln matches up with BogueChitto at 6:45, followed by Loyd Star battling West Lincoln at7:30.

Wesson

Joining Wesson in its Friday jamboree in Stone Stadium on theCo-Lin campus are Bassfield and Crystal Springs.

“Our jamboree gives us a chance to work out some kinks beforethe first ball game,” said Wesson head football coach TommyClopton. “It gives us a chance to see what the young kids cando.”

At 7, the Wesson varsity meets Bassfield, followed by a juniorvarsity game at 7:30. At 7:50, the Bassfield varsity faces CrystalSprings. followed by a JV game at 8:20. The final game between theWesson varsity and Crystal Springs starts at 8:40.

Franklin County

At Meadville, Franklin County first-year head football coachTrent Hammond and his Bulldogs entertain North Pike, Port Gibsonand Vicksburg.

“Our kids are tired of hitting on each other,” said Hammond. “Wewant to get it over with. We want to get out of it without gettinganybody banged up.”

North Pike meets Port Gibson at 6 Friday and Franklin Countytangles with Vicksburg at 6:30. North Pike tackles Vicksburg at7:15 and Franklin County entertains Port Gibson at 8.

Lawrence County

Lawrence County, coached by Mike Davis, hosts Mendenhall,Tylertown and West Jones.

Mendenhall meets Tylertown at 7 and will play 2 regularquarters. At 7:30, all four junior varsity teams will play onopposite sides of the 50-yard line.

“I really like the format,” said Davis. “It gives our young kidsa chance to play, too. You don’t get them banged up too bad.”

Davis said that the LCHS booster club would be cooking ribeyesteak sandwiches for the fans.

Hazlehurst

Jefferson County, Prentiss and Wingfield are expected to jointhe Hazlehurst Indians in Friday night’s jamboree which was createdby new Hazlehurst head football coach Todd McDaniel.
