Enterprise escapes Wesson with two victories

WESSON – R.C. Johnson pumped in 16 points to spark theEnterprise Yellow Jackets to a 53-50 non-division win over theWesson Cobras Tuesday night.

In the varsity girls game, Lacy Palomarez fired in 12 points todirect the Lady Jackets to a 41-24 victory over the Wesson LadyCobras, ending a three-game losing streak for Enterprise.

In the boys game, Wesson’s Richie Miller attempted a threepointer in the final five seconds which would have tied the game.Instead, the basketball rolled off of the rim and into anEnterprise player’s hands as the game ended.

“R.C. is getting more aggressive,”said Enterprise boys coachBilly Vaughn following the game. “The others got him the ball whenhe has been open.”

Wesson held a slim 12-10 edge over Enterprise at the end of thefirst quarter. At halftime, the Jackets had battled back and wentinto the dressing room with a 25-25 tie.

Going into the final frame, Wesson came back to take a brief42-41 lead over Enterprise before being outscored 12-8 down thestretch.

The Jackets (5-4) got added support from Rufus Allen with 15points. Shermaine Vaughn finished with 14 points, eight assists andfour steals. Tops off the backboards with eight rebounds was BillyReeves, followed by Vaughn with seven rebounds. Pierre Harthornehad six rebounds and Allen finished with five rebounds.

The leading scorer for the 4-6 Wesson boys was Billy Ray Millerwith 18 points. Richie Miller followed with 14 points. Coaching theWesson boys is Jimmie Nail.

Enterprise 41, Wesson 24

In girls action, the Lady Jackets (7-3) opened up with a 12-2lead over the Lady Cobras at the end of the first quarter. Athalftime, Enterprise commanded a 22-9 advantage. Going into thefourth quarter, the Lacy Jackets held a 14-point, 31-17, lead overthe Lady Cobras.

“It was good to win one,” said Vaughn.

Contributing to the Enterprise win with 10 points, six assistsand three steals was Roberta Johnson. Monica Leggett led off thebackboards with six rebounds followed by Joyce Allen with fourrebounds. Palomarez and Allen had four steals apiece.

The 3-8 Lady Cobras got eight points from Kail Baldwin. LadyCobra coach Lane Young had no comment after the game.

Enterprise hosts North Pike Thursday for its final game beforethe Christmas Holidays. The junior high girls begin play at 5 p.m.The Dexter Tournament, scheduled for Dec. 27-29, has beencanceled.

Wesson returns from the holidays on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, atSt. Andrew’s for a Division 6-2A matchup beginning at 6 p.m. withthe varsity girls.
