Cary Rogers Acy

Graveside services for Cary Rogers Acy, of Corpus Christi,Texas, were 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at Old Silver Creek BaptistChurch Cemetery. Wilson Funeral Home was in charge ofarrangements.

Mrs. Acy, 71, died and was given the gift of heavenly life onNov. 24, 2009, at her residence. She was born in Mississippi onAug. 5, 1938, to Cary Jackson Rogers and Maxie Jim Hathorn.

She was self-employed. She was a retired bookkeeper. She was amember of Arm Baptist Church.

Mrs. Acy will be missed by all who felt her love and support.She had a unique zest for life that made all who met her want to bea part of that life.

Preceding her in death was her beloved husband of 44 years,Frank Acy; her parents, Cary and Maxie Hathorn Rogers; and herbrother, Trent Rogers, all of Monticello.

Survivors are her sons, Wayne Acy, of Monticello, and Mike Acy,of Houston, Texas; her daughter, Ava Hopkins, of Corpus Christi;her grandchildren, Trey Hopkins, Franklin Acy III and wife, Amber,Amy Wyatt and husband, Tavin, Angela Acy, Elizabeth Acy and SierraAcy; and her great-grandchildren, Franklin Acy IV, Tyler Watt,Brayden Hopkins and Acy Wyatt.

Katherine Holmes Foster

Services for Katherine Holmes Foster, of Brookhaven, are 2 p.m.Monday, Nov. 30, at Brookhaven Funeral Home Chapel on North JacksonStreet with burial in Rosehill Cemetery.

Mrs. Foster, 82, died Nov. 26, 2009, in Metairie, La. She wasborn in Tallulah, La., on Jan. 21, 1927, to Mahlon P. Miller andThelma White Miller. She moved to Brookhaven at the age of 14.

She was in banking for 48 years, retiring from State Bank assenior vice president in 1992. She attended Whitworth College andwas a graduate of the charter class of the Mississippi School ofBanking at the University of Mississippi.

A longtime community servant, Mrs. Foster served two terms as aboard member of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce.She also served on the advisory board for Lincoln ResidentialCenter and Brookhaven Vo-Tech Advisory Council. She was a member ofthe Official Women’s Club of Mississippi, the Bank MarketingAssociation, Financial Women International and the IBAA. Shereceived the MBA 40 Years Service Award in 1981.

Her family will remember her with joy and intense gratitude forher consummate grace, inspiration, interest in the lives of others,her generosity of spirit, and most recently for this woman of deepand abiding Christian faith, her unbounded courage and calmdetermination in the face of a devastating illness. We will recallher with love, pride and thanksgiving and were blessed to haveknown her as a mother, wife, sister and aunt.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband of 35years, George B. Holmes.

Survivors are her devoted husband of 17 years, Joe H. Foster, ofBrookhaven; her daughter, Katherine La Coste and husband, Lee, ofMetairie; her son, Marty Holmes, of Brookhaven; her grandchildren,Joshua and George Holmes, of Brookhaven, and Victoria Russ andhusband, David, of Covington, La.; and her sister, Jean Case, ofSpanish Fort, Ala.

Eva Johnston Kenna

Eva Johnston Kenna died of cancer on November 27, 2009 at St.Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson, MS. She was 74 years old. Relativesand friends are invited to attend a visitation on Sunday, November28 from 5 until 8 p.m. at Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb.Visitation will continue on Monday, November 30 from 10 a.m. untilservices at Johnston Chapel United Methodist Church in Summit.

A service of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday,November 30 at Johnston Chapel United Methodist Church with theRev. Allen Dearing officiating. Interment will be in JohnstonChapel United Methodist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Kenna was born in Summit on October 16, 1935, to BenjaminThomas and Eula Williams Johnston. She was the eleventh of twelvechildren. In 1953, she graduated from Johnston Consolidated Schoolin Johnston Station, where she played basketball, participated invarious clubs, was a school beauty and inducted into Who’s Who.Following graduation from Draughn’s Business School, she marriedBilly McDaniel, and from this marriage her two sons were born. Shemarried John Lewis Kenna in 1973 until death.

Mrs. Kenna worked in the business office of Croft Metals Inc.until 1972 when she joined the business staff of Southwest RegionalMedical Center where she worked until retirement in 1995.

She was a member of Johnston Chapel United Methodist Church forover 60 years, where she served on various boards, sang in thechoir and belonged to the Ida Vickers Circle of the UnitedMethodist Women. She also was a member of the Summit GardenClub.

Throughout her life, whether at work or play, Mrs. Kenna broughthappiness to others and was known for her sweet smile. Sheexperienced joy from the simple things in life and adored theout-of-doors, particularly when it came to gardening and flowers.She never saw a flower she disliked, and she never saw a weed shecould tolerate!

She especially enjoyed the company of others and was happiestwhen she was able to help someone, earning her the nickname,”Mother Theresa.” In the end, she faced a disease and demise not ofher choosing. Still, she never complained, wrestled all she couldof life while physically able, and then, without burdening otherswith bitterness or regret, bravely faced life’s end.

She is survived by her husband, John; a stepdaughter, Debra AnnBible and husband, Ron, of Slidell, La.; a stepson, John L. KennaJr., of Ocean Springs; her sons, Timothy L. McDaniel, of Atlanta,Ga., and Keith W. McDaniel and his wife, Lorraine of Covington,La.; her stepgranddaughters, Kailin Lambuth, of McComb, and ErinKenna, of Ocean Springs; her granddaughters, Alexandra and MadisonMcDaniel, of Covington; her siblings, Floyd Johnston, GeraldineReed, Erma Stockton, Bryant Johnston, Jewel Johnston, Glen Johnstonand Lemelia Boone; and numerous in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousinsand friends, all of whom she cherished.

Memorial donations may be made to the Memorial Garden Fund atJohnston Chapel United Methodist Church. Alternatively, inrecognition of her kind spirit, perform a kind deed forsomeone.

Mrs. Kenna lived life as a gift to be shared with others. Manyshared with her through the years, and she died grateful for thelove and kindness shown to her by a multitude of family andfriends. The family joins her in expressing thanks and gratitude toall who supported her through her battles with cancer includingDrs. Rao and Levin and the staff of the MD Anderson Cancer Centerin Houston, Texas; Dr. Fredricks and the staff of St. Dominic’s inJackson; the membership of Johnston Chapel United Methodist Church,the many other church families who kept her in prayer; and familyand friends too numerous to list.

Frank D. Laird

Services for Frank D. Laird, of McCall Creek, are 2 p.m. Sunday,Nov. 29, at Riverwood Family Funeral Service Chapel with burial inMt. Zion Church of Christ Cemetery.

Mr. Laird, 66, died Nov. 27, 2009, at his residence. He was bornon Jan. 25, 1943, to Jim Laird and Annie Ruth Franklin Laird.

He was owner of Frank Laird Construction Inc. He was a member ofConcord Baptist Church.

Preceding him in death was his father, Jim Laird; and hisbrothers, Claude Laird, Alfred Laird, Bill A. Laird, Paul Laird,Barnett Laird and Jim Laird Jr.

Survivors are his wife, Carolyn Victoria “Vicky” Strahan Laird,of McCall Creek; his mother, Annie Ruth Franklin Laird, ofBrookhaven; his son, Charles G. “Chuck” Laird, of Hattiesburg; hisbrother, Herbert Laird, of Brookhaven; and his sisters, Jimmie MaeAhrend and Dian Laird, both of Brookhaven.

Mr. Lambert, 45, died Nov. 26, 2009, at his residence. He wasborn on June 3, 1964, to Bobby Lambert and Barbara JohnstonLambert.

He was disabled. He was a member of Ruth Baptist Church. He wasa loving father, grandfather, husband and son. He served as LincolnCounty Constable Post Two from 1992 until 1996.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Linda Gail Greer; and hisstepson, Jamey Cartrette.

Vonceil Lofton

Services for Vonceil Lofton, of Lake Charles, La., and formerlyof Brookhaven, were 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at Mt. Zion BaptistChurch with burial in the church cemetery. Brookhaven Funeral Homeon North Jackson Street was in charge of arrangements.

Visitation was Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of theservice at the church.

Mrs. Lofton, 85, died Nov. 25, 2009, at her residence. She wasborn in Natchez on April 3, 1924, to Cleve Bingham and AldieRushing Bingham.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Zion BaptistChurch.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, CharlesDewey “C.D.” Lofton; her son, Tommy Lofton; her sister, WilmaSalmon; and her brothers, Abner Bingham and Hardy Bingham.

Survivors are her son, Jimmy Lofton, of Lake Charles; hergrandchildren, Robby Lofton, Julie Crockett and Jennifer Wroten;and her great-grandchildren, Trent Lofton, Shelby Lofton, CourtneyCrockett, McKenzie Crockett and Charles Wroten.

Sallie Ann Shannon

Services for Sallie Ann Shannon, of Brookhaven, are 1 p.m.Monday, Nov. 30, at St. Paul M.B. Church with burial in HillcrestCemetery. Williams Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Sunday from 1 until 6 p.m. at the funeralhome.

Ms. Shannon, 82, died Nov. 25, 2009, at Haven Hall Health CareCenter. She was born in Copiah County on Oct. 19, 1927, to CharlieShannon and Edna Davis Shannon.

She was a 1947 graduate of Alexander High School and receivedher A.A. degree from Tougaloo College. She retired from BrookhavenPublic Schools after 28 years of service. She also worked forHeadstart of Mississippi for a number of years. She was a member ofthe Homemakers Club of Brookhaven. She was also a member of St.Paul M.B. Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, presidentof the women’s ministry and a member of the finance committee.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her foster parents,John and Fannie Davis; and her brother, Charlie Lee Shannon.

Survivors are her sisters, Angie Bingham, of Chicago, Ill., andDorothy Lee, of Jackson; her nieces, Jerr Bingham, of Chicago,Cheryl Lee and Kathy Marshall, both of Jackson, and Clara Lee, ofMitchellville, Mich.; and many cousins and friends.
