One dead in Highway 84 wreck

A Friday morning wreck on Highway 84 resulted in the death of aBrookhaven man and left a Lincoln County man with seriousinjuries.

James Allen, 79, of 516 North Church Street, Brookhaven, diedjust two hours after the 1985 Datsun truck he was driving west onHighway 84 hit a 1998 Dodge church van, driven by Otis Bowman, 39,of 1224 Strawberry Lane. The van was apparently headed north fromLower Meadville Road to Watts Lane, according to authorities.

Allen, a World War II veteran who was retired from JacobsonLawnmower Company, was pronounced dead at 11:15 a.m. at King’sDaughters Medical Center (KDMC), Lincoln County Coroner-MedicalExaminer Morris Henderson said.

Bowman, pastor of Johnson Grove Church of Christ, was trappedunder his vehicle following the 9:12 a.m. accident and was taken toKDMC by ambulance. He was listed in stable condition late Saturdayevening, a hospital spokesperson stated.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the accident,but with no witnesses to assist, they have not come to any specificconclusions.

“We are still looking into it,” Mississippi Highway PatrolTrooper Johnny Leggett said. “Right now, it looks like the front ofMr. Allen’s pickup truck hit the front right side of Mr. Bowman’svan while Bowman crossed 84.”

Brookhaven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for Allen.Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeralhome. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home,with burial at Mt. Zion Church of Christ.
