MILLINGTON, Tenn. – On a sunny, wind-swept Sunday afternoon atUSA Stadium, Co-Lin regained its offensive power in the NJCAADivision II World Series. The Wolves exploded for 13 hits andwhipped the Jefferson Davis (Al.) Community College Warhawks 7-4 inan elimination game, led by second baseman Chris Dunn who went3-for-5 with two doubles.

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – On a sunny, wind-swept Sunday afternoon atUSA Stadium, Co-Lin regained its offensive power in the NJCAADivision II World Series. The Wolves exploded for 13 hits andwhipped the Jefferson Davis (Al.) Community College Warhawks 7-4 inan elimination game, led by second baseman Chris Dunn who went3-for-5 with two doubles.

Co-Lin (46-16) remains alive in the double-eliminationtournament, bouncing back from a 4-0 Saturday shutout at the handsof Iowa Central. The Wolves play the loser of the Karl Albert(Okla.)-Lincoln Land (Ill.) game tonight at 7:30 in USAStadium.

Sunday’s victory over the Warhawks was sweet redemption for theWolves. They had been limited to just 4 hits in the loss to IowaCentral. It was the first time for them to be shut out in 61 gamesthis year.

Co-Lin head coach Keith Case said he detected a sense ofconfidence in his team prior to Sunday’s game. His Wolves were intheir first-ever World Series.

“The real ice-breaker came before we took the field,” said Case.”We felt comfortable. We were relaxed.”

Centerfielder Edison Lee got the Wolves rolling in the firstinning. Designated as the visiting team on the scoreboard, Co-Linscored its first-ever World Series run in the top of the first. Leeled off with an opposite-field single to right off Jeff Davispitcher Aaron Hunt. Lee scored on a fielding error by the shortstopand it was 1-0.

Dunn followed with a single to left, scoring Mouton who hadreached on the error and Co-Lin 2-0.

“Their pitcher was trying to throw fastballs past us,” said Lee.”We were ready for him.”

In the third inning, Dunn delivered a ground-rule double whichbounced over the fence near the 414 marker in center field. Itscored Nook Logan who had reached on a single, making it 3-0.

Designated hitter Josh McNulty followed with another key hit, a2-RBI single to the right-center field fence. It was McNulty’sfirst plate appearance since the Region 23 Tournament two weeksago. McNulty had broken a bone in his glove hand and was unable toplay in the Central District playoffs.

Trailing 5-0 at that point, Jeff Davis head coach Keith Evanselected to replace Hunt with relief hurler Sammy Carter.

Dunn said the Wolves knew they were in a must-win situation. “Itwas do or die. We didn’t have much choice.”

In the fifth, Dunn led off with a single. Newman hit a linedrive off the pitcher. Adam Different delivered a sacrifice fly tocenter field and Dunn scored, making it 6-0. Brandon Atkins, acourtesy runner for Newman, scored on Britt Hederman’s single andthe Wolves led 7-0.

Co-Lin rightfielder Scott Poole said the Wolves entered the gamewith a goal of staying alive. “We played with a lot moreenthusiasm.”

On the mound, Co-Lin freshman Josh Garrett started and got thevictory. Garrett (9-2) lasted 6 and 2/3 innings. He gave up 4 runson 7 hits. He struck out 4 batters and walked 2.

“I was a little nervous out there but everybody played good,”said Garrett. “It was a good win.”

The Warhawks (37-22) , from Brewton, Ala. had lost a 5-4decision to Mercer (N..J.) . The last four innings of therain-delayed contest were completed Sunday morning. Two rain delaysSaturday had postponed the final two opening round games untilSunday.

In the third World Series game Sunday, Carl Albert beatAllegheny (Pa.) 12-3.

Garrett, a right-hander from Monticello, pitched 3 hitlessinnings after giving up a single in the first. The Warhawks plated1 run in the fifth. A triple by Brandon Long led to a a run-scoringgrounder by Brent Hastings.

In the seventh, the Warhawks rallied for 3 more runs. LeeTownsend replaced Garrett in the seventh with 2 out and Co-Linleading 7-3. A single by Brian Haney through the mound scored thenext run and it was 7-4.

Relief specialist Doug Atkins replaced Townsend in the eighthand recorded his eighth save of the season.

“Josh threw a good ballgame,” said Case. “Doug came in and did agood job shutting them down.”

Dunn and Logan had 3 hits apiece. Lee, Mouton and Newman had 2hits.
