BA boys capture consolation prize

CANTON — Rebounding from a semifinals loss, the BrookhavenAcademy Cougars turned back a strong challenge Saturday night andedged Columbus Heritage Academy 69-67 in the Class AA StateTournament consolation game finals. Directing the victory were ColeHodges with 19 points, Jeremy Winborne with 6, Jonathan Winbornewith 14 and Alex Davis with13.

In the championship finals, South No. 4 seed Columbia Academyknocked off Prairie View Academy 70-63.

All four finalists advance to the MPSA Overall Tournament atMississippi College this week.

The BA Cougars (33-4) got 5 rebounds apiecefrom Alex Davis and Seth Davis. Jeremy Winborne dished out 6assists and Alan Gray 4.

“We rebounded well from our Friday night loss.,” said BA coachDale Watts. “We showed enough class to maintain control of thegame.”

The Cougars led by 15 points in the first half but foul troublebegan to plague them. They lost three players in about threeminutes to five personals in the third quarter. Brookhaven led41-32 at halftime.

Jonathan Winborne sank 1 free throw with 20 seconds left tosecure the win. The Patriots missed a last-second layup which wouldhave sent the game into overtime.

Heritage (24-10) was powered by Nathan Kober’s 20 points. KyleDennis added 13 points, Dudley Swoope 12 and Chae McGill 11

Prairie View 66, Brookhaven 65

“We didn’t come out and play well,” said Watts after watchinghis team lose to the Spartans. “Prairie View was really focused.All year I’ve said they have a very good team.”

Jonathan Winborne led the Cougars with 20 points. Seth Davisaccounted for 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jeremy Winborne added 16points.

Alex Davis had 7 rebounds for the Cougars. Hodges and JonathanWinborne handed out 6 assists each.

The Cougars led 32-31 at halftime but the Spartans outscoredthem 19-14 in the third quarter.

Brookhaven closed the Spartan lead to 2 points with 2:12remaining as Sophomore forward Jeremy Winborne nailed a three fromthe right wing. That’s as close as the Cougars would get as theSpartans closed the door with clutch free throw shooting.
