BA Cougars win home opener

Brock Smith scored 17 points, Zach Thornhill 14 and MichaelEvans 10 as the host Brookhaven Academy Cougars won their seasonopener Tuesday night, beating the Adams County Christian SchoolRebels 54-38, despite being shorthanded. Only six varsity playerswere available for the game due to BA’s involvement in the Class AAstate football playoffs.

Brookhaven Academy also won the varsity girls game in John R. GrayGymnasium as the Lady Cougars cruised to a 56-32 victory. TerahWinborne scored 11 points and Anna Lofton and Laura Beth Wright 10apiece for the unbeaten hosts.

Brookhaven Academy will host Trinity Episcopal of Natchez Thursdayfor seventh grade and junior high girls and boys action, plus avarsity girls game. There won’t be a varsity boys game because bothschools are involved in the state football playoffs.

The Cougars (1-0) got 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals fromBrock Smith. Brennan Miller had 5 boards and Will Hickman 4.Thornhill made 3 steals.

“Our kids gave a good effort,” said BA boys coach Dale Watts. “Wewere short-handed and they played hard.”

The Lady Cougars (4-0) roared to a 26-11 halftime lead for CoachBarry Gray. Wright pulled down 8 rebounds to lead the boardwork,followed by Anna Katelyn Mangold and Mary Lindsey Magee with 6apiece.

Winborne dished out 5 steals and 4 assists. Lofton had 5steals.

Eleven points by Brandis White led the Lady Rebels inscoring.

Junior High Results

In junior high action, ACCS won 33-27 over the Cougars. LesterWells led the Rebels with 8 points.

Zack Smith led BA with 9 points. Caleb Brown added 6 points andJosh Wiggins 5.

The BA girls beat ACCS 28-21 as Lindsey Winborne tossed in 10points. Destiny Allen added 10 rebounds and 7 points. Anna Carollonetted 5 points and Madison Warren 4.

ACCS got 8 points from Tory Laird.

BA won the seventh grade game 22-12.
