Seven teenagers have received suspended jail sentences and otherpenalties after pleading guilty to a malicious mischief chargefollowing an April “prank” at Brookhaven High School, authoritiessaid.

The teens, five of whom were BHS students and two others whowere out of school, were apprehended shortly after they tossed anexplosive chemical mixture into the food court area at the highschool around midnight on April 19, said Superintendent Dr. SamBounds. Bounds described the sound as that of a “large firecracker”or “shot gun blast,” but it was not a bomb.

“There was absolutely no damage done,” Bounds said. “There wasno sign of it.”

Brookhaven Police Chief Arlustra “Pap” Henderson echoed Bounds’comments. The chief described the device as bathroom chemicalsmixed in a jug.

“Exactly what chemicals were used, I can’t tell you,” Hendersonsaid while also adding there was no damage done.

However, given the nature of the incident, the teens werecharged with malicious mischief and prosecuted in city court,Henderson said. The teens, some of whom are juveniles, were notidentified.

Henderson said the teens all pleaded guilty May 9 to one countof malicious mischief. They received one-year jail sentences thatwere suspended for one year of probation, ordered to pay $250 finesand to perform 30 days of community service.

Also, Bounds said the five BHS students received five days outof school suspension and, after returning, were sent to thealternative school to complete the school year.

“My feeling is the kids were mischievous,” Bounds said, addingthat he took into consideration the fact that no damage was done.”It was a prank and I felt the students should receive some sort ofdisciplinary action.”
