WESSON — At 5-foot-2, Wesson senior golfer Perry Katherine Furrswings a mighty big club. So much, that Furr signed a scholarshipto play for the Mississippi State University women’s golf team nextfall.

“It was my goal to play college golf,” said Furr. “I am blessedto be able to do this.” She goes by her initials PK.

Furr said was contacted last summer and visited the MSU campusin July, meeting women’s golf coach Christi Sanders. She said sheliked Coach Saunders.

During the MSU-LSU game, Furr talked with Sanders and told hershe would commit to State. “I really enjoyed talking to her.”

P.K., the daughter of Richard and Robin Furr, began accompanyingher father to the golf course when she was 5 years old. “I used togo with my dad when is I was five. “

When she entered the sixth grade, the 12-year-old Furr decidedshe wanted to play golf. “My daddy taught me. My dad said if Istuck with it, it might get me through college.”

Up until her senior year, Furr played tournaments all over theSouth and has won numerous titles. She is a member of the Wessongolf team that are the defending Class 2A state champ. Their golfcoach is Jody Ray.

Furr uses Nike Irons and Titlist Pro V One golf balls. Heraverage driving distance is 245 yards.

While at Mississippi State, Furr plans to major as an athletictrainer. In the classroom, she has a GPA of 3.5.

Furr had the opportunity to walk on at Ole Miss, but couldn’tpass up the scholarship at MSU. Her parents are Ole Miss graduatesand her older sister Abby is finishing her degree in pharmacy atOle Miss.

Furr is working on a new swing to get ready for the longercourses in the SEC. “I hit the ball really low,” said Furr of herswing. “I have to carry the ball further.” The coaches instructedher on correcting it and Furr is working on it this season.

Furr, who played other sports at Wesson, including basketballand softball, decided to dedicate her time to golf her senior year.She was selected to the Wesson Hall of Fame. Furr is a member ofFCA, the National Honor Society and the Irish Club (schoolspirit).

Last weekend, Furr and her family attended the LPGA Tournamentof Champions held on the Magnolia Grove Course in Mobile, Ala. “Igot a lot of autographs,” said Furr. “I got to meet AnnikaSorenstam.”
