Brook girls win title

MONTICELLO — The Brookhaven Lady Panther slowpitch softballteam captured their division title Thursday night with a 10-9 winover the Lawrence County Lady Cougars in nine innings.

Brookhaven (19-4, 9-1) outscored Lawrence 3-2 in the ninthinning to take home the title. The teams were deadlocked at 7-allat the end of seven innings.

“I’m proud of my girls,” said Brookhaven head coach LisaCovington. “We worked hard to get here.”

Brookhaven will host d’Iberville in the first round of the CLass4A state playoffs. The best-of-three series is set for Tuesday atMamie Martin Field. The game time will be announced.

Brittany Smith posted the win and Lorrin Baker absorbed theloss.

Powering the Panthers with a double and three singles was AshleySykes. Katie Smith ripped three singles. Smashing a pair of doubleswas Brittany Smith. Christi Martin and Katie Steward each doubledand singled.

Adding support in the Brookhaven win with two singles was KellyVinson. Sabrina DeLaughter doubled. Jana Wallace and Terri Hodgessingled.

The Cougars were led by Emily Smith with a over-the-fence homerrun and a double. Also homering was Jessica Johnson. Shaina Starksand Maygan McCloud smashed three singles apiece. Hitting a doubleand a single was Melana Woods. Sonni Smith and Baker each collectedtwo singles.

Junior Varsity

Lawrence clipped Brookhaven 7-6.

Kelsey Freeman paced the Panthers with a double and a single.Stevie Wright, Brittany Bateman and Jodie Wooley hit safely.DeLaughter absorbed the loss.
