Wesson puts away Copiah All-Stars in extra inning

The Wesson All-Stars broke a 6-all with Copiah in the top theseventh inning with three runs then shut down the hosts hitter ontheir way to a 9-6 win Thursday night at Keystone Field in thefirst round of the North Majors Sub-District Tournament.

Wesson faces the Brookhaven Americans tonight at 6 p.m. TheAmericans received a first-round bye.

“We have worked hard all week,” said Wesson head coach MarkNewman after the game. Coaching the Copiah All-Stars is JohnPyron.

After Wesson took a 9-6 lead in the seventh, Newman movedshortstop Paxton Cupit to the mound to retire the Copiah batters.Bryce Berry struck out. Taylor Smith grounded out. Cody Lack rippeda double. Matt Mattingly struck out for the final out and ended thegame.

“Paxton did what he had to do,” praised Newman. “He had goodchange up.”

Asa Newman was the winning pitcher and worked the first threeinnings with three strikeouts and a walk. Justin Smith worked thefourth through sixth innings for Wesson, collecting astrikeout.

Going the distance in the loss was Latham Pyron with fivestrikeouts and three walks.

Wesson went up 3-0 in the top of the first. Paxton Cupit led offwith a single. Payton Cupit doubled to score Paxton for the 1-0lead. Austin Hutson singled to score Payton for the 2-0 lead.Hutson stole second, third and home on passed balls for the thirdrun.

In the bottom of the first, Copiah came back with three runs totie the game at 3-all. Jacob Ashley was walked. J.P. Campbelldoubled. Doug Strait followed a double , driving in Ashley andCampbell to cut the deficit to 3-2. Strait then stole third andhome on wild throws.

Wesson came back in the top of the second with three more runsfor a 6-3 lead. Asa Newman singled. Jace McCardle doubled. LukeHernandez advance to first to load the bases. Aaron Sorrels andWebb Calhoun bit back-to-back singles to score two runs to push thevisitors lead to 5-3. Hutson walks and Hernandez was walked in thesixth run.

Following one scoreless inning, Copiah came back with one run inthe fourth to cut the Wesson lead to 6-4. Strait tripled and Webbsingled to score Strait.

In the bottom of the sixth, Copiah scored two runs to tie thegame and force the extra inning. Jonathan Sherman doubled and JoeyHenderson singled. Dankea Broom was hit by a pitch and the baseswere loaded. Ashley singled to drive in the fifth run, cutting thedeficit to 6-5. Campbell singled to drive in Henderson for thetying run.

Zack Wilson and Hutson led off the top of the seventh withback-to-back doubles, scoring Wilson for the 7-6 lead. JacobFischer singled and Newman walked. Hutson scored the eighth runfrom third base on a failed pickoff play to second base. McCardlehit a hard single to score Fischer for the ninth Wesson run.

Hutson also doubled for Wesson.
