A Brookhaven family is mourning the loss of two of its familymembers after an early Saturday morning accident claimed both theirlives.

Dora Diane West, 57, and her daughter Shanon Marlana “Lana”Adams, 37, both of Brookhaven, were pronounced dead at the scene byemergency medical technicians, said Copiah County Coroner PhilHoward.

Rusty Boyd with the Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop M saidWest’s 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling southbound on Interstate55 near mile marker 50 when the vehicle ran off the right side ofthe road, hit a tree and caught on fire. MHP received the call atapproximately 12:50 a.m.

West was driving the vehicle when the accident occurred, Boydsaid. The two passengers in the car were West’s daughter and her8-year-old grandson.

Jason Holmes of Hazlehurst, who was southbound behind West’sTahoe, was the first on the scene and managed to pull the 8 yearold from the wreckage, but he was unable to get to anyone else,Boyd said.

The 8 year old was transported to King’s Daughters MedicalCenter where he was treated and released, Boyd said.

Howard said he has asked for an autopsy on both women to ruleout any medical problems that may have caused the accident.

“I suspect they may have tried to dodge something in the road,like a deer,” Howard said.

The Wesson Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the scene atapproximately 1 a.m. said WVFD Chief Dustin Brewer.

Firefighters indicated that when they arrived at the scene thefire which had started in the back of the vehicle had alreadyreached the front hood.

The coroner received the call at 1:33 a.m. and said when hearrived the car had completely burned.

“A car like that can burn in less than 10 minutes,” Howardsaid.

He indicated that everything in a vehicle is very flammable,including the carpet, seats and upholstery.

“When I spoke with the family this morning they were reallyshook up,” Howard said.

Howard said it was unclear where the women were traveling from,but indicated that they may have been heading home from a shoppingtrip.

“This is very tragic, especially this time of year,” Howardsaid.

West and Adams owned and operated the downtown business GlamourGirlz.

Riverwood Family Funeral Service is in charge of arrangementsfor both women, which are incomplete.
