WESSON — The delicious smell of smoked Boston butt roasts willwaft across the Co-Lin campus, starting next Tuesday. It’s abarbecue signal which brings many hungry folks in a stampedingsearch for the exact location.

However, each butt will cost $20. This is the second year forthe Co-Lin football coaching staff to employ this fund-raiser. Themeat received rave reviews last summer.

According to Co-Lin head coach Glenn Davis, the meat packagescan be picked up June 29-30. They will be delivered on Saturday,July 2.

Each Co-Lin football player is expected to sell at least 10roasts. Proceeds will provide a travel package of clothing for eachplayer, including a Reebok warm-up suit, an under Armour workoutshirt, and Reebok workout shoes.

For sure, these are not the best of economic times for collegeathletic departments. Fund-raisers are necessary to meet the needsof each player.

Work continues on Co-Lin’s Frank Pitts Field House. It got a newroof last year. Now the coaches are busy painting and cleaning.

Co-Lin’s outdated weight training facility has received amuch-needed paint job, too. Needed much worse is a new, up-to-dateweight room.

Although Co-Lin does have some new equipment for the players touse, the facility groans with age. Former Co-Lin star offensivelineman Randy Thomas announced plans to make a large donation forconstruction of a new facility over a year ago but the first spadeof dirt has yet to be turned.

According to Davis, Thomas is making some adjustments with hisbusiness manager and associates before the check arrives. The ideallocation would be next to the Pitts Field House or better yet,attached. That situation remains in Limbo. Thomas plays for thePhiladelphia Eagles.

Over the last five years, there have been dramatic improvementsin athletic facilities at all four Lincoln County schools,Brookhaven High School and Brookhaven Academy. Bogue Chitto is thelatest and last school in the county to build a new facility forweight training and dressing room use.

For sure, it has been long overdue.

Wolfpack Invitational set July 22

According to Davis, the 2005 Wolfpack Invitational is scheduledfor Friday, July 22, at the Wolf Hollow Golf Club. The 4-manscramble format will feature morning and afternoon shotgunstarts.

Breakfast and lunch will be served, plus a dinner during theevening awards ceremony. Beverages will be provided during thetournament. There will be prizes for longest drive, closest to thepin, hole-in-one and best golf outfit.

The tournament’s grand prize will be 4 tickets to the Bristol500.

Entry fee is $85 per player. Corporate team sponsorships areavailable for $500.

Also on sale are reserved chairback season ticket seats for the2005 football season. The cost is $50 per seat and that includes 5home games. Call (601) 643-8348 for more info.

The Wolfpack debut is at home, Sept. 1, versus Holmes. Also onthe Stone Stadium menu are Northeast on Sept. 10, Gulf Coast (HC)on Oct. 1, East Central on Oct. 8 and Jones County on Oct. 20. TheNortheast, Gulf Coast and East Central dates are Saturday afternoongames.

Davis said he is trying to accommodate more of the parents andrelatives who can’t make the usual Thursday night contests. It’sdifficult rolling out of bed the next morning after a long drivehome from the ball game.

Cubby Bear Camp at Southwest

The first Cubby Bear Football Camp at Southwest CommunityCollege in Summit is set for June 27-30. It is open to youth, age5-12. It’s a day camp, lasting from 8:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m.

Camp fee is $60. Each camper will receive a t-shirt.
