Cobras ambush Bassfield

      WESSON – Terry Brown tossed in 23 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in leading the Wesson Cobras to a 58-49 ambush of the Bassfield Yellow Jackets in the Snake Pit. Farrod Green chipped in 11 points and 7 rebounds in the Division 7-2A showdown.

      In the girls game, Bassfield blasted the short-handed Lady Cobras 57-35, powered by Janeesha Booth’s 25-point explosion.

      Wesson resumes region play Tuesday night at Enterprise.

      The Cobras (13-7, 2-1) rebounded from a disappointing region loss to Amite County. Guard Kaleb Skinner collected 10 points, 5 steals and 5 assists in the victory. Eddie McCullum had 6 assists and 5 rebounds and

      Wesson coach Rusty Newman was delighted with his team’s turnaround. “This is definitely a huge win for us. We have not been playing good ball, but tonight the guys really showed up to play.

      “I am extremely proud of them for playing hard the whole game. We really played well offensively by being patient and getting good looks. We also did a great job in transition, which led to some easy baskets.

      “We have to continue playing this way because our district is shaping up to be a tough one.”

      Bassfield, the region favorite, got 12 points from Desmond Hammond. Jeff Smith and Ron Logan. The Jackets trailed 28-13 at halftime and never caught up.

       The Lady Cobras (8-11, 1-2) fell behind 41-16 at halftime. Corianna Young’s 14 points led Wesson.

       “We played well early on,” said Wesson girls coach Rusti Magee. “We slowed the pace down and took them out of their element.

      “Bassfield is a good team though and forced us to play at their tempo. We struggled trying to keep up.

      “I’m proud of the girls for their efforts especially with us missing two starters tonight. We need to regroup and get ready for two extremely important games next week.”

       Booth was followed by Aliyah Williams with 11 points and Mersaides Myers with10.

Junior Varsity Results  

       In the JV girls game, Wesson edged Bassfield 24-19, led by Carnesha Green’s 7 points. Alaysha and Aurianna Vaughn each had 6 points.
