WESSON — The Co-Lin Lady Wolves had the opportunity at the endto tie or win the game but couldn’t get the last shot to go in asthe Mississippi Delta Community College Lady Trojans handed Co-Lina 60-58 Monday night loss, its first of the season.

Co-Lin (2-1) travels to East Central at Decatur Thursday for adoubleheader. The women’s game begins at 6 p.m.

Jessica Ayers, a 5-7 freshman guard from Greenville Weston,nailed the go-ahead basket for a 60-58 lead with less than 10seconds left to play. Co-Lin sophomore guard Reisha Bullock hadscored a field goal with 24 seconds left to tie the game at58-all.

The MDCC women are coached by Burnadette McDonald.

“We had too many mistakes,” said Co-Lin women’s head coach GwynYoung after Monday night’s first loss of the season.”We playedhard. We blocked and we pushed. We didn’t rebound well enough.”MDCC outrebounded Co-Lin 35-28.

The game was close in the first half. With 3:56 left, MDCCfreshman forward Ashley Lee went on a 4-point run to give theTrojans a 26-23 lead. A bucket from sophomore guard Tiffany Lawsonof Mendenhall pushed the visitor’s lead to 28-23 with 1:40 left inthe first half. Co-Lin sophomore forward Alisha Mason and freshmanforward Yashunda Williams hit back-to-back baskets to cut thedeficit to 30-27 at halftime.

Co-Lin started the second half with an 8-2 run as MDCC struggledbriefly from the floor and the Wolves took a 35-32 lead with 14:38left in the game. The lead didn’t last as both teams took turns atthe lead until the 7:50 mark when the hosts pushed their margin to5 points, 50-45.

Again MDCC battled back to finally pull out the win.

Bullock, a 5-9 starter who hails from Kenner, La., was theleading scorer for Co-Lin with 16 points and 4 rebounds. Sophomoreforward Kristin Ellis pumped in 10 points and led off thebackboards with 7 rebounds.

For the Trojans, Ashley Brooks, a 5-10 freshman forward fromBenoit Ray Brooks, led with 19 points, rebounds and 4 steals.Netting 14 points was Delissa Scott. Ten points and 6 rebounds wereadded by Brittany Overton.

“We have to get back to the drawing board and work on it,”addedYoung. “There were too many dumb plays on our part. Hopefully,we’ll learn from this and get better.”
