Wesson hosts Enterprise; South Pike visits LCHS

The undefeated Wesson Cobras will host the Enterprise FightingYellow Jackets Friday for a big Region 6-2A matchup at StoneStadium on the Co-Lin campus. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

In other area football action, South Pike is at Lawrence County,Franklin County invades Amite County, Pearl River Central travelsto McComb, Wilkinson County visits Hazlehurst and Crystal Springsentertains Port Gibson.

Enterprise (3-4, 1-1) captured their first Region win, beating theHinds AHS Bulldogs 35-8. Wesson got some revenge from last year bybeating Loyd Star 36-19 last week. Josh Garret coaches the FightingYellow Jackets.

Coach Garrett said the Enterprise and Wesson series is always atough rivalry matchup because both teams will step up and playhard.

“Wesson is a well-coached and very disciplined team,” said Garrett.”They are very good on both sides of the ball. We will have to comeout and play with the same intensity we had last week. We arefighting for a spot in the playoffs, so we will have to play hardand be disciplined as well. Our kids are looking forward to anexciting game.”

In the win over Hinds AHS, senior Brad Prather rushed 12 times for107 yards and caught two passes for 41 yards, scoring twotouchdowns to lead Enterprise on offense. Garrett Greer providedhelp as he had 21 carries for 73 yards. Quarterback Cody Whitecompleted 6 of 9 passes for 65 yards with one interception. LanceSpring caught 3 passes for 17 yards.

Defensively, Trent Sandifer and Prather led the Jackets with 8tackles apiece. Matt King provided 7 stops. White collected 6tackles. Jedd Moak, Ethan Whittington, Greer, White and Kingrecovered a fumble.

Wesson (7-0, 2-0) head coach Tommy Clopton said Enterprise hasimprove a lot and they will play hard.

“Enterprise has improved throughout the season,” said Clopton. “TheJackets have a good team that plays hard and is well coached. Itwill be tough, hard fought game for both teams. We both arebattling for a playoff spot and a lot is on the line.”

In the win over Loyd Star, quarterback Matt Smith proved to berock-solid as he led Wesson’s offense by passing for two touchdownsand running for another. In passing, Smith was a perfect 5-for-5for 100 yards and rushed 11 times for 40 yards.

On defense, the Cobras were led by Barron Miller’s 11 tackles andan interception. Gage Wilson had 9 tackles and Derrick Lyles 8.Fischer had 2 interceptions.

Last season, Wesson hammered Enterprise 27-6.

Lawrence County (3-5, 1-1) hammered Crystal Springs 43-0 last weekwhile South Pike (2-5, 2-0) won their second straight game bycrushing Columbia 36-7 in 7-4A action last week.

The Monticello-based Cougars are coached by Mike Davis. The Eagles,out of Magnolia, are under the direction of Willie Brown.

“This is a big district game for us,” said Davis. “South Pike isriding a two-game winning streak and has the momentum coming in.They will have some good running backs that have speed. We willhave our work cut out for us as we try to stop them. We are lookingforward to a hard, fought game on both sides of the ball.”

In the win over Crystal Springs, Lawrence County amassed 332rushing yards. Glenn Russell led the way with 120 yards on 18carries. Alexander Montgomery also provided 93 yards on 13 rushes.Quarterback LaQuin Hilliard completed 2 out of 3 passes for 41yards and rushed 14 times for 69 yards.

Franklin County (3-5, 1-1) travels to face rival Amite County for aRegion 7-3A matchup this week. The Bulldogs, coached by RickyO’Quinn, suffered a 32-17 loss to Hazlehurst last Friday.

“This is a very important district game,” said O’Quinn. “We arestill fighting for a playoff spot. Amite County has a very goodteam and it is homecoming for them; so they will be pumped. We willhave to come out and get off to a good start and play to ourpotential throughout the game.”

In the loss to Hazlehurst, Milton Griffin showcased his talents bymaking some big plays as he finished with eight carries for 74yards rushing and a touchdown to lead Franklin Countyoffense.

On defense, Calvin Robinson made five tackles and an interceptionfor the Dawgs. Freshman Trey Norman added five hits.

Hazlehurst (5-2, 1-1), coached by Todd McDaniel, prepares to hostWilkinson County for a Division 7-3A matchup and homecoming.

Last Friday, Wilkinson County thumped Jefferson County 26-18.

“Wilkinson County has a big physical team,” said McDaniel. “Theyhave a bunch of kids over 300 pounds. Hopefully, we can outrun themand be able to stop their offense. Wilkinson is looking to spoilour homecoming like we spoiled theirs last season.”

In the win over Franklin County, Gabriel Gray accounted for 30 ofhis team’s 32 points. Gray led the Indians offense with 242all-purpose yards and five touchdowns, a career-high for thepreseason All-State selection.

McComb (3-4, 0-3) lost a tough 39-18 contest to Wayne County. TheTigers, under the direction of head coach Malcom Jones, has lostfour-straight games.

Friday’s opponent, Pearl River Central, was shut out 34-0 byBrookhaven.

In the loss to Wayne County, The Tigers managed to score threetimes. Quarterback Lamarvin Ashley scored on a 5-yard run.Carvellis Luckett scored on a 78-yard run. McComb’s final touchdowncame on an 18-yard pass from backup quarterback Alex Woodall toTradarious Holloway.

North Pike (7-1, 2-0) travels to face Region 7-4A rival Columbia(2-6, 0-2) Friday. The Summit-based Jaguars, coached by ChrisSmith, spanked Port Gibson 39-6 last week.

Columbia fell 36-7 to South Pike last week.

In the win over Port Gibson, Quarterback Revis Butler led NorthPike offensively, completing 6 of 11 passes for 125 yards. Herushed for 125 yards on 14 carries.

Defensively, Tariq Johnson led the Jags with 8 tackles. A.J.Jefferson provided 7 stops. Kethrick Thompson collected 6tackles.
