Wesson Cobras rule jamboree

BOGUE CHITTO – The Wesson Cobras were expected to dominateFriday’s Bogue Chitto Football Jamboree and the Cobras didn’tdisappoint their followers on Troy Smith Field. Class 2A Wessonoverpowered the Class 1A Bogue Chitto Bobcats and West LincolnBears before loading the bus and heading north for CopiahCounty.

Wesson coach Tommy Clopton said he was satisfied with a fewaspects of his team’s performance but he saw plenty of room forimprovement in his sweat-soaked, 56-member squad. The Cobras beatBogue Chitto 16-0 and West Lincoln 32-8 as Clopton begansubstituting freely in the second half of varsity action.

“We looked sloppy at times but there were some bright spots,”said Clopton. “We have to learn to be more consistent.

“We went through the spring injury-free and that was good forus.”

Clopton’s Cobras won’t start preseason drills in late July likesome teams do in an attempt to accommodate a jamboree. Their firstgame is Aug. 27, hosting Richland.

Wesson 16, Bogue Chitto 0

Steve Jones scored on a long TD run off a toss sweep andquarterback Matt Smith hooked up with Patrick Boone on a 30-yardscoring strike for a pair of Cobra touchdowns in the fist half.Austin Graham ran a 2-point conversion.

In the junior varsity quarter, Wesson backup quarterback JacobFischer raced 70 yards for a TD. Bogue Chitto countered with a48-yard scoring run by Brandon Wells.

Smith was intercepted twice throwing long when the varsityresumed play. Tyler Saucier intercepted Smith in the end zone andMichael Martin speared a pass near midfield.

Martin, working a quarterback, was intercepted by KyleCross.

The Cobras and Bobcats played another JV series after theWesson-West Lincoln half. Wells scored on a 5-yard run. Franklinwas intercepted by Darrius Martin.

Wesson 32, West Lincoln 8

Jones galloped 70 yards on the first play from scrimmage, givingthe Cobras an early lead as Gage Wilson ran the PAT.

It was 16-0 when Smith passed 42 yards to Cross for a TD andJones ran left end for the PAT.

Wesson’s Chris Craft intercepted West Lincoln eighth gradequarterback Joshua King on the next series, setting up a 39-yard TDpass from Smith to D.J. Coleman. Smith also hit Coleman with thePAT pass, making it 24-zip.

Franklin took over the offense scored the final Wesson TD on asweep. He connected with J.C. Hester on the PAT pass.

Powered by Alston Bozeman and Deon Moore, the Bears marched 70yards on the ground against Wesson’s second team defense. Bozemangained 55 yards on the drive and Moore gained 15, including a3-yard TD run. Bozeman ran the 2-point conversion.

West Lincoln head coach Chris Calcote said that Dee Price andCalvin Kees, starters at quarterback and running back last season,had decided to give up football. He said he only has four risingseniors on the team.

“We are a very young team,” said Calcote. “We have four juniorsand our quarterback is an eighth grader. Our kids are working hardto get better.”

Calcote said the Bears would participate in a preseason jamboreeat Natchez Cathedral Aug. 13 and open their season Aug. 20, atWilliams-Sullivan in Durant.

Bogue Chitto 20, West Lincoln 0

The Bobcats regrouped after their loss to Wesson and raced pastWest Lincoln. After halting, the Bears at BC’s 9-yard line, ColtonMcCullough broke loose on an 89-yard TD run.

Robert Barnes, wearing jersey No. 9, raced 69 yards for BC’ssecond TD. Garrett Wallace kicked the extra point.

Chris Hall ran for BC’s final TD and Wallace added the extrapoint for a 20-0 advantage.

Bogue Chitto coach Gareth Sartin said he was encouraged by histeam’s strong finish. “Wesson whipped us pretty good but we didmuch better against West Lincoln. Robert Barnes ran the ball hard.We were able to throw the ball and make some catches.”

Sartin worked Wells and Martin at quarterback. Sartin saidJavier Gee, last year’s starter, was no longer with the team.

“What it boils down to is how hard our kids are willing to workthis summer,” said Sartin. “That will determine how successful weare in the fall.”

The Bobcats make their 2010 debut Aug. 20, at Madison St.Joe.
