WESSON — Co-Lin’s Garrett Jones saw opportunity knocking and heanswered the call Wednesday on Sullivan Field. Jones scored thegame-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Wolfpackedged LSU-Eunice 6-5.

Jones, a sophomore third baseman from Natchez, slapped a 1-outsingle to left field. He stole second base. With 2 out, Jones wentto third on a passed ball and scored on a headfirst slide whenThomas Tillery’s wild pitch skipped past the catcher.

“I tried to get something started,” said Jones. “Coach (KeithCase) called a delayed steal. I got to third on a passed ball. Itwas curveball (wild pitch) low and it got underneath thecatcher.”

The victory provided a measure of revenge for a doubleheaderloss at Eunice on Feb. 18. The Bengals won 11-1 and 12-2.

“We really wanted to win this one bad,” said Jones. “The lasttime we played them it was 30 degrees, sleeting and snowing. Wedidn’t play well.”

Co-Lin starting pitcher Brandon Chretien had a personal interestin the game. The Lafayette, La. product grew up just 30 miles fromLSU-Eunice. He knows many of the players.

“I finally got to pitch against them,” said Chretien. “They havea good team. They are about 20 minutes from where I live.”

In 6 innings, Chretien gave up 9 hits and 5 runs, 3 of themearned. He walked 2 and fanned 1.

Chretien was replaced by Matthew Tubbs in the seventh and thesophomore from Crystal Springs was credited with the win. Tubbsallowed only 1 hit in 2 innings of relief. He walked noneand struckout 2.

“We wanted to beat LSU-Eunice,” said Tubbs. “They came at uspretty hard the last time we played them. My two-seamer fastballwas working well for me.”

Case said he was pleased with his team’s victory. “Our guysplayed well. LSU came out swinging. Our guys never got down.

“Brandon Chretien competed extremely well,” Case continued. “Hethrew 90 pitches. Matthew Tubbs came in and did a great job.

“(Catcher Matthew) Schexnayder kept both pitchers under controland gave us a a chance to win.”

The Bengals (18-5), coached by Jeff Willis, got 10 hits andcapitalized on 5 Co-Lin errors. They led 4-0 in the top of thefourth.

A monster, 2-run homer by Xavier Qualls cleared the right-centerfield fence and ignited Co-Lin’s comeback. The Wolves scored 3 runsin the fourth and 2 more in the fifth to lead 5-4.

Designated hitter Joel Hurt accounted for 3 Co-Lin hits. RyanWilliams tripled and score a run. Collecting an RBI single wasSchexnayder. Todd Siders and Dane Orders singled.

Brett Durand started for LSU-E. He gave up 7 hits in 4.2innings. He allowed 5 runs, 3 of them earned, striking out 2 andwalking 2.

Shortstop Brandon Richey had 3 hits for LSU-E, including atriple.

Northwest 16, Co-Lin 8

In the nightcap, Northwest rebounded from a 13-1 loss toLSU-Eunice and whipped Co-Lin.

Centerfielder Kyle Chunn led Northwest with a 4-for-5performance, including a triple. Chunn scored 3 times.

Ranger first baseman John David Beane had 2 hits and 5 RBIs.

Co-Lin finished with 11 hits. Co-Lin got 2 hits from Qualls,Hurt and Orders. Williams, Schexnayder, Jones, Nick Gunter and JoshLogan singled.

“Northwest swung the bats extremely well and we just couldn’tget them out,” said Case. “We need to start playing betterdefense.

“Northwest competed. Their team batting average is .333.”

Co-Lin used 4 pitchers in the loss, starting with Ryan Hoben(2-2) who was replaced in the fourth by Adam Cook. They gave up 15hits.

Co-Lin (13-6) hosts St. Charles (Mo.) Friday for a doubleheader,starting at 3 p.m.
