An inmate was pronounced dead at theUniversity of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) Wednesday morningafter attempting to hang himself Tuesday while being held at theLincoln County Jail, according to law enforcement officials.

    The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department was holding Nicholas M.Marshall III, 41, for the Mississippi Department of Corrections,said Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing.

    Marshall, of 2410 Heuck’s Retreat Road, was charged with a housearrest violation, according to arrest reports.

    Marshall was taken into custody by the sheriff’s department onTuesday at approximately 12:15 p.m., Rushing said. At 3:45 p.m.Tuesday jail staff discovered he was attempting to hang himselfwhile in a holding cell.

    A jailer had checked on Marshall just prior to the discovery of hishanging attempt, Rushing said.

    The inmate was still alive when found by jail staff, and he wastransported to King’s Daughter’s Medical Center. Later that eveninghe was transferred to UMMC in Jackson.

    Marshall was pronounced dead at 11:23 a.m. at UMMC, said LincolnCounty Coroner Clay McMorris.

    Pending the investigation, no cause of death has been officiallydetermined McMorris said.

    Further details remain undisclosed while an investigation into theincident is ongoing.
