JACKSON – The Wingfield Lady Falcons heldBrookhaven to a pair of free throws in overtime, escaping with a70-62 Region 6-5A win over the Lady Panthers Tuesday night.

      In the boys game,turnovers by Brookhaven in the waning moments allowed the WingfieldFalcons to come away with a hard-fought 78-74 win over thePanthers.

    Brookhaven hosts Pearl in another Region 6-5A test Friday night inSinclair Gym.  A JV game isscheduled for 5 p.m.  Thevarsity girls game tips off at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity boysaround 7:30.

Wingfield 70, Brook  62,OT

    Brookhaven (11-9, 1-1) had one of its better shooting nights inrecent memory; making 40 percent (23 of 58).  That included an 0 for 7 clip from3-point range.  Despitethose numbers, the Lady Panthers led 19-14 entering the secondquarter.

    Wingfield (5-12, 2-1) began their climb back into the game, behindthe torrid shooting of Mercedes Morgan.  She sacked 3 treys in the secondframe, to aid the Lady Falcons to a 34-31 halftime lead..

    Lady Panther head coach Freda Craft saw her ballclub battle back toforce overtime.  ChristenBenson’s offensive putback, off of a pair of misses at the charitystripe, fell through as time expired.

    Wingfield, coached by Anita Johnson, took a 64-60 lead on basketsby Morgan and Azende Collier.  The Lady Falcon defense  held Brookhaven to a pair of freethrows in the extra session.

    “We shot the ball well tonight from the field and free throw line,”commented Craft.  “We hadtoo many turnovers and did not block out on the boards at keystretches doing the game.”

    Senior guard Tiakara Kelly led all scorers with 24 points and 3steals.  Benson had 12points 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists.  Shareeka Hill pumped in 10 points, 8rebounds and 3 steals. Diamond Herring dished out 5 assists.

    Morgan paced Wingfield with 19 points and 5 assists, followed byAzende Collier with 16 points.  The Lady Falcons held a 12-8advantage in second-chance points, but lost the rebounding battle38-35.

Wingfield 78, Brookhaven74

    The Falcons (8-12, 2-1) got a shooting clinic from senior guardAubrey Humphreys in the opening period.  He canned 16 (3 treys) of hisgame-high 31 points, as Wingfield concluded the first quarter witha 29-20 lead. 

    Humphreys also had 7 rebounds for  Coach Herman Sanders.

    The Panthers (15-5, 0-2) outscored the homestanding Falcons 25-14in the second, to take a 45-43 lead into the halftime lockerroom.  Brookhaven’s defensebecame their offense; converting numerous Wingfield turnovers intotransition baskets and free throws.

    Coached by Herman Sanders, the Falcons  outscored Brookhaven 35-29 in thesecond half.  The thirdquarter finished in a 60-all deadlock.

    Brookhaven had several advantages late in the final 8 minutes, onlyto lose the lead on turnovers and poor shooting down thestretch.

    “We just could not put it away down the stretch,” said Panther headcoach Preston Wilson.

    Wilson’s squad got 24 points (5 treys) and 4 assists from GlennBuie.  Ross Hill tossed in16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 assists.  Fred Trevillion had 10 points, 7rebounds and 6 assists. 

    The Panthers committed 20 turnovers and shot 52 percent (26 of 50)from the floor; but were 16 of 27 from the charitystripe.  Brookhaven held a33-29 rebounding edge.
