Flora Aline McCormick May

Flora Aline McCormick May was born in Lincoln County on Feb. 11,1925, to William W. McCormick and Flora Hazel Kyzar McCormick, bothdeceased. She died on July 27, 2010. Preceding her in death was herhusband of over 50 years, Thomas Walter May, who she lovingly caredfor in his declining years; and two children, Donald Kevin May andMelanie Mahnke.

She is survived by her brother, Wade McCormick of Athens, Texas;her sister, Geneva Lee of Pearl; her son, Thomas William May, andgirlfriend, T.A. Boyd; her daughters, Reba Faith Spencer andhusband, Dwight, and Martha Joyce Ott and husband, Cliff.

Mrs. May has six grandchildren, all living, including Mariah”Wendy” Reed and husband, Tony, Veronica Martin and husband, Sean,Bobbye Hope Booth and husband, Richard “Fleet,” Caitie Boatwrightand husband, Jason, KEB (Kenneth Eugene Bowman) and wife, Terri,and Garret May; and six great-grandchildren, all living, includingCourtney and Brittany Justice, Chris Dyer, Brett and Skyler Knight,and McKenzie Bowman.

She was a lifelong member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Sheloved her church and her Sunday school class, the “Nell Smithclass.” Mrs. May was a proud member of the Daughters of theAmerican Revolution, of which she was a charter member and regentfrom 1973-1977 of the Chloe Holt Chapter. She was an active memberof Eager Elders, the Widows Club, the Piddler’s Club and the 50+Group.

Mrs. May was a housewife and mother before she completed herMaster’s degree in Elementary Education. She found it funny that indelaying her education to get married and have children that Daddythought it was important to have her “MRS.” degree. Being adetermined, independent person she did however continue on in herforties to complete her education.

She taught at Southwest Mississippi Christian Academy, briefly atBrookhaven Academy, and completed her teaching career at EnterpriseAttendance Center from which she retired in 1993. She taught thirdgrade and often joked about never “getting out of third grade.” Sheand Daddy started a “potpourri” business after retirement. Thisallowed them to travel and be with people and they made a greatmany new friends.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 29, atBrookhaven Funeral Home on North Jackson Street in Brookhaven withvisitation continuing at 1 p.m. there on Friday, July 30 untilservices at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Baptist Churchfollowing the service.

Friends and family are invited for a time of fellowship followingthe burial at Mrs. May’s home.

Mrs. May loved her church, husband, life, children, grandchildren,great-grandchildren and friends and family. She will surely bemissed by all. God bless you, mama!
