Co-Lin Wolves halt slump at Gulf Coast

PERKINSTON – The Co-Lin Wolves snapped a 13-game losing streakwith a 6-5 South Division win over the Gulf Coast Bulldogs in thefirst game of a baseball doubleheader Wednesday.

In the second game, Gulf Coast scored the winning run on a wildpitch for a 7-6 victory.

Co-Lin is 15-27 on the season and 3-15 in the South. The Wolvesentertain Hinds Saturday for a South twinbill at Sullivan Fieldbeginning at 1 p.m.

“Our guys competed all night,” said Co-Lin head baseball coachKeith Case. “They played hard and made some good thingshappen.”

Co-Lin 6, Gulf Coast 5

Cable McMinn, a sophomore from Franklin County, smashed a 2-runhome run in the top of the eighth inning to give Co-Lin a 6-4 leadand eventual win.

Reliever Drew Weaver (4-4) collected the win in 4.2 innings with 1run allowed on 5 hits, 1 walk and no strikeouts. Starter RyanKennedy worked the first 2.2 innings with 6 strikeouts, 4 walks, 3runs and 3 hits allowed. Finishing out the final two outs wasDaniel Jenkins.

Absorbing the loss was starter Tyler Buckley with 4 strikeouts, nowalks, and 3 runs allowed on 5 hits. Michael Baxter worked thefifth inning followed by Nick Purdy in the eighth.

Jeff DeBlieux and Edmund Cheatam smashed two singles apiece for theWolves. Singling were Zach Williams, Matthew Freeman, LukeBrumfield and Ryne Tutor.

Leading the Bulldogs with a double apiece were Jeremy Hill, ZachPorter and Derek Davis.

Gulf Coast 7, Co-Lin 6

In the second inning, Bulldog Jeremy Hill belted a grand slam homerun to give Gulf Coast a 5-0 lead. The Wolves retaliated with 3runs in the top of the third and fourth innings for a 6-5 lead. TheBulldogs tied the game 6-all in the bottom of the fourth beforescoring the winning run in the seventh.

Jake Miller was the winning pitcher. Reliever Ben McDowell (0-2)took the loss. McDowell fanned 1 batter, walked 1 and allowed 1 runon 2 hits.

Co-Lin starter Marshall Hall worked the first 2 innings with 2 runsallowed on 1 hit, 3 walks and 3 hit batters. Mitch Tidwell workedthe next 1.2 innings, followed by McDowell.

With game-winning run on third base, Co-Lin reliever DanielJenkins’ first pitch was wild and Gulf Coast’s base runner to winthe game.

Directing the Wolves at the plate with a double and a single wasBritt. Cheatam singled twice.
