There’s still time to find “gold in the litter” this month asKeep Lincoln County Beautiful continues its Great American Cleanupcampaign, officials said.

Sixty gold-colored eggs, which contain gift certificates torestaurants and other businesses, have been placed around thecounty to encourage citizens to pick up roadside litter.

“We’re going to leave them out until April 30,” said Jane Kees,campaign coordinator.

KLCB’s Great American Cleanup Campaign runs from April 7-19.However, Kees said the eggs would be left out longer to avoidending the project on Easter weekend.

Finders can turn the gold eggs in to the chancery’s clerk officeto receive their prizes. Kees said any eggs that are not redeemedwill be picked up and gift certificates returned to the donatingbusinesses.

“We know where they are, and they will be collected so they willnot add to the litter,” Kees said about the eggs.

So far, three gold eggs have been turned in, said Chancery ClerkTillmon Bishop. Bishop said his office supported the cleanup effortand agreed to serve as the turn-in site for the eggs.

“We’re not involved in it in any other way,” Bishop said.

In other campaign activity, a trash container will be put outSaturday and Sunday at the intersection of Hurricane Lake Road andSpringview Trail. The trailer was placed in Bogue Chitto and inBrignall the last two weekends.

Items that can be put in the container include clothing, lumberfrom homes and trash. Larger items, such as tires, refrigeratorsand other white goods are asked to be placed beside the containersfor pick up.

Household garbage, dead animals and commercial trash or buildingsupplies cannot be placed in the the containers.

Kees reported success in cleanup campaign activities this month.She mentioned students at Brookhaven High School, Alexander JuniorHigh School, Enterprise and Loyd Star who have cleaned up areasaround their schools.

“We have a number of schools that have been working and a numberof individuals,” Kees said.

The county has a limited number of bags available at theDistrict 2 barn on old Highway 51. Groups may call the barn at833-0905 or come by to pick up litter bags.

Kees said there was a large pile of filled garbage bags that hadbeen returned to the District 2 barn. She credited Solid WasteCoordinator Ronnie Durr’s efforts in promoting and working on thecampaign.

“Evidently, he has good collection up there,” Kees said.
