District officials and members of the Brookhaven School Board ofTrustees celebrated the district’s many recent accomplishments atthe monthly meeting Monday.

Lipsey Middle School students did a presentation showing themany positives of the school. The school exceeded the state averagein every testing category and was ranked a Level Four, the onlyschool in the district to meet such strict requirements.

“We’re very proud of that,” said Superintendent Dr. Sam Bounds,also mentioning that the district was one of two, with the otherbeing the Lincoln County School District, to fall into the 28percent of districts statewide to meet the AYP (Adequate YearlyProgress) benchmark for all grades.

Bounds and board members also talked about how impressive it wasthat all sub-groups, which are divided according to race, class andother factors, were close in test scores.

“It shows we’re teaching to all students,” said Bounds. “Thisyear we’ve met the needs of every one of our students.”

Board member Carl Aycock also pointed out what a tough balancingact it was to reach every group equally. He complimented theteachers on a job well done.

The district received good remarks on several recent audits aswell, Bounds reported.

In other matters, the board approved a number of fund raisers,the district’s financial report and the request to re-advertise forbids on a house at the corner of East Monticello Street and ThirdStreet.

The house had been previously sold, but the owner was unable tomove the house to the desired location, said AssistantSuperintendent James Tillman.

Resignation and employment in the areas of teacher assistant,cafeteria workers and bus drivers were also approved by the boardbefore closing the meeting with an executive session on a studentmatter.

The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be held at 6p.m., Oct. 28, at the central office.
