WESSON — Co-Lin head football coach Glenn Davis believes hisWolves can conclude their season on a winning note Saturday if theyreduce their turnovers on offense and play solid defense. That’sthe challenge as Co-Lin (1-7, 0-5) hosts the Southwest MississippiCommunity College Bears (1-7, 0-5) for homecoming. Kickoff is 2:30p.m. in Stone Stadium.

Co-Lin threatened to score several times against Jones Countybut turnovers stopped the Wolves on three occasions as the Bobcatsprevailed 30-19 last Saturday at Ellisville.

“We must execute better and protect the ball,” said Davis.

There were some bright spots for Co-Lin. Sophomore tailbackJulius Roberson rushed for 170 yards on 26 carries and scored twoTDs. Wide receiver Daryl Johnson had two receptions for 115 yards.On defense, Johnson returned a fumble 85 yards for a TD as a freesafety.

Co-Lin freshman Beau Billeck returned at quarterback againstJones after missing the Hinds game due to a concussion sustained aweek earlier at East Central. He has completed 80 of 141 passes onthe season.

“We played one of our better games against Jones but we gave uptwo post patterns for touchdowns,” said Davis. “It would have beendifferent if we would have just held onto the football.”

The Bobcats were limited to 111 yards rushing on 46 attempts bythe Wolfpack defense. Co-Lin allowed 298 yards total offense.

By comparison, Co-Lin finished with over 400 yards totaloffense.

Looking at the Bears, Davis said he was impressed by Southwest’sdefense. “They are real athletic. Southwest has a lot of speed. Ondefense, their three down guys have played well all year.”

On defense, Jeremy Pittman (6-4, 240) of Summit (North Pike)stands out. At linebacker Ryan Taylor (5-11, 210) of Magnolia(South Pike) is among the leading tacklers. Defensive linemanAntonio Godfrey (6-4, 260) from Tri Cities, Ga. is strong. AaronAmmons (5-11, 295) of Brandon stars at nose guard.

“Their offense has turned the ball over a lot which stopped themfrom scoring,” said Davis.

At quarterback, Southwest depends on freshman Ty Griggs (6-0,185) of Bradenton, Fla. who wears jersey No. 88, and sophomoreWally Cummins (6-3, 230) of Madison.

Freshman Jessie Burton (5-10, 180) of Magnolia has been theBears’ leader in rushing. He also plays wide receiver.

Bears Bag Forfeit Win

At Fulton last Saturday, the Bears’ game with Itawamba wassuspended by game officials in the third quarter due to athunderstorm. The Indians were leading 10-7 at the time.

“I didn’t understand why we didn’t wait the thing out,” saidSouthwest head coach Dom Green. “We had rode the bus for six hoursto get there.

“We had the momentum going for us. Our commissioner said thegame had to be resumed or it would have to be mutually terminated.We were willing to go back up there and start the game but(Itawamba) Coach (Jeff) Terrill didn’t.

“I wish we could have done it on the field instead of on thetelephone,” said Green. League commissioner Jim Southward awarded aforfeit win to the Bears because Itawamba refused to resume thegame.

Green said he expects Co-Lin to battle for a homecoming victory.”I think both teams will be fired up. It’s their homecoming. Ourkids have played hard all year. We are very similar typeteams.”

Green said Co-Lin has offensive potential. “Co-Lin has scoredpoints against everybody they’ve played. If they hold onto the ballagainst Jones, they win.”

By comparison, Green’s Bears lost to Jones by 4 touchdowns.”Jones only scored one time against our defense but we wound uplosing 35-7 because of turnovers,” said Green.

Green is in his fourth year at the helm and has an overallrecord of 12-23.

“Co-Lin has some good receivers and a big offensive line,” saidGreen. “On defense, they are really big up front. Shadler Manningis a very good defensive end.”

Due to statewide recruiting and out-of-state scholarships, Greensaid the rivalry has lost some of its intensity. “The rivalry isfor the alumni. We only have about 20 kids from our Mississippidistrict.”

Wolftails: Last year Southwest whipped theWolves 30-7 in Summit. Co-Lin finished 2-7 under former head coachDave Poinsett while the Bears wound up 5-4.
