BA Cougars visit Copiah Colonels

The Brookhaven Academy Cougars and the Copiah Academy Colonelskicked off their seasons with impressive wins last weekend. Fridaynight, Brookhaven (1-0) invades Gallman to face off against Copiah(1-0) in a battle between former AA rivals. The game kicks off at 7p.m.

In other academy action, Centreville Academy invadesParklane.

In last week’s action, Brookhaven Academy whipped SillimanInstitute 34-20 and Copiah thrashed Riverfield (La.) 34-13.

Brookhaven Academy head coach Herbert Davis said Copiah hasseveral talented athletes on this year’s team.

“Copiah has got some athletes,” said Davis. “They have a goodfootball team. They have No. 11 (Hunter Renfroe) and No. 5 (KeltonSmith) and No. 12 (Ben Boone) and No. 4 (Bryce Guess). They have alot of weapons.

“Their line seems to be jelling,” continued Davis. “They do agood job up front.”

In the win over Silliman, BA junior quarterback Chandler Rogerscompleted 9 of 17 passes for 130 yards and rushed the football 4times for 38 yards. He rushed for a 43-yard TD and hit teammateDonovan Lorraine for a 39-yard score. Jennings Mills scored 2TDs.

Defensively, Jamison Powell and Donovan Lorraine led BA with 11tackles apiece.

Copiah head coach Scotty Cline is impressed with Brookhaven’soffense.

“Brookhaven has one of the best quarterbacks in AA football inChandler Rogers,” stated Cline. “They have two good wide receiversin (Bubba) Keene and (Tripp) Jolly. They beat Silliman pretty good.They are going to be physical.”

In the win over Riverfield, Colonel sophomore tailback KeltonSmith rushed 16 times for 146 yards and a touchdown. Seniorquarterback Hunter Renfroe, who completed 3 of 4 passes for 63yards and a touchdown, rushed the football 9 times for 94 yards andscored a pair of TDs. Ben Boone rushed 10 times for 67 yards and atouchdown and caught 1 pass for 33 yards for a TD.

“We need to work on technique and all of our little things,”added Cline. “We need to sharpen up and give us a chance tocompete.”

Bryce Guess paced the Colonel defense with 11 tackles.

Parklane (0-1) fell to powerhouse Jackson Academy 47-20 in itsopener. Pioneer senior running back Josh Armstreet rushed for 77yards on 15 carries and scored a pair of TDs. Centreville lost 12-0to Oak Forest last Friday.
