BHS rally sinks Bogue Chitto

Sophomore Christen Benson provided a game winning single in theseventh inning as the Brookhaven Lady Panthers came from behind toedge the visiting Bogue Chitto Lady Cats 5-4 Monday night inslowpitch softball action. Erica Bridwell scored the winning runafter reaching on a error.

“I am very proud of the girls for battling back,” said Brookhavenhead coach Lisa Covington. “We showed a lot of heart.”

The Panthers (11-6, 2-0) resumes play tonight hosting the McCombLady Tigers for Senior night in a District 5A rivalry meeting. TheCats (15-4, 1-0) will be in action Thursday, hosting the WestLincoln Lady Bears for the District 1A championship game. The gamesare set to start with junior varsity at 5 p.m., followed by varsityat 6.

Brooke Hosick provided a strong pitching performance for thePanthers collecting one strikeout and one walk. Her teammatesdidn’t commit an error.

Kerri McGehee (1K, 0BB) absorbed the loss for the Cats.

Christen Benson, Left-center fielder, led Brookhaven’s offensiveattack with a double and a single. Emily Freeman and RashanaStewart contributed two singles apiece. Hitting safely were EricaLenior, Sarah Ayers and Dana Herring.

Freshman right-center fielder Mattie Avants led Bogue Chitto’shitters with two singles. Adrienne Wallace provided a double. JosiePorter, Darcy Miller, Bradi Davis, Rheagan Welch and Toy Smith hita single apiece.

“Brookhaven hit the ball better than us,” said BC head coach ScottLeggett. “They managed to get the key hits when needed. We justshowed that one inning (4th) the way we should have beenplaying.”

BC scored all four of its runs in the fourth. The Cats committedfive errors in the loss.

In JV action, The Panthers rallied in the fifth inning to score allfive of their runs to slip by the Cats 5-4.

Alycen Speaks (1K, 7BB) was the winning pitcher for Brookhaven.Shelby Crosby (1K, 1BB) absorbed the loss for Bogue Chitto.

Cheyenne Smith was the leading batter for the Panthers with twosingles. Hitting safely were Ivy Smith, Shelby Case, Taylor Murray,Julianna Porter and Speaks.

The Lady Cats got singles from Alana Nettles, Mallory Allen,Christian Black, Heather Miller, Colby Kirkland and LaurenWatts.
