The Brookhaven soccer teams returned to King Field Saturdaymorning, after 3 years of playing their home games at the HanselKing Sportsplex. Brookhaven and Terry braved the cold, breezytemperatures for a Division 6-4A varsity doubleheader.

It would the Hinds County visitors who spoiled the homecomingfor Brookhaven. The Bulldogs kicked off the first game and defeatedthe Panthers 3-1 behind 3 goals by junior Jess Shelby. The LadyBulldogs completed the sweep with a 5-1 win over the LadyPanthers.

Brookhaven hosts Division 6-4A rival McComb Tuesday night atKing Field. The girls game begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by theboys at 7 p.m.

The Panthers (5-2, 3-1) worked the short passgame to take a 1-0 lead at the 14:20 mark of the first half. TylerAlexander scored on a short kick, with an assist from GilesLangston.

Brookhaven scored twice more but both individual goals werewiped off the scoreboard by an offside penalty and an inboundsviolation by the Panthers.

Terry (8-0, 5-0) would tie the game at 1-1 18 minutes later on agoal by Shelby. The same score held at the intermission.

“We wanted to work the short and long passing game,”said BHShead coach Kevin Bower.

Shelby tacked on a pair of goals in the second half for thefinal margin.

Both teams were aggressive on the offensive end, with Brookhaventaking nearly 21 shots on-goals; compared to 12 by Terry. ThePanthers committed 14 fouls, while the Bulldogs had 10. Terry hadan assist on each of their 3 goals.

The Lady Panthers (4-4, 1-2) could not generateany offense in the opening half. Brookhaven spend a majority of thegame on the Terry end of the field, as the Lady Panthers hadnumerous passes stripped away by the Lady Bulldogs.

Terry used their speed and footwork to gain a 3-0 advantage athalftime, on goals by Ashley Brown (2) and Emily Leverett.

Brookhaven got their lone goal of the day at the 27:03 mark ofthe second half. Freshman Cary Anne Rake, sandwiched betweenseveral Terry defenders, found an empty net.

The Lady Bulldogs answered with goals from Samantha Smith andSarah Smith.

Brookhaven had only 4 shots-on-goal, compared to 21 by the LadyBulldogs. The Lady Panthers had 12 saves, with only 2 saves byTerry.
