A Baton Rouge teen with family members in Brookhaven was recovering from surgery after being shot in the knee during a Thursday night shooting spree at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater.

     Bonnie Kate Pourciau, 18, was among more than 50 injured when a gunman opened fire during a midnight screening of the new Batman film, “The Dark Knight Rises.” Twelve people were killed in the rampage that shocked the nation.

     Porciau’s mother, Kathleen, is a cousin to Brookhaven attorney Clint Gardner’s wife, Holly. When contacted Saturday, Holly Gardner said the family had been asked not to make any statements.

     Kathleen Pourciau told The Advocate of Baton Rouge that her daughter was operated on Friday afternoon. The newspaper cited a Pourciau family statement that said Bonnie Kate’s injuries “while serious, are not life-threatening, and the early indicators from her surgery have been encouraging.”

     Bonnie Kate Pourciau and a friend, who was not injured in the shooting, had decided to stop in Colorado to see the movie while on their way from Baton Rouge to Seattle, Kathleen Pourciau told the newspaper. Pourciau said her daughter used the cellphone of a man who helped her out of the theater to call and relay what had happened.

     Bonnie Kate Pourciau had recently been doing mission work in Haiti, Clint Gardner said late Friday morning while local family members awaited word on her condition. He estimated he may have last seen her several months ago at a family reunion.
