Some good news arrived here recently with the confirmation thatthe National Endowment for the Arts is providing a $10,000 grant tohelp restore parts of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber ofCommerce building. Only two such grants were awarded inMississippi.

Some good news arrived here recently with the confirmation thatthe National Endowment for the Arts is providing a $10,000 grant tohelp restore parts of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber ofCommerce building. Only two such grants were awarded inMississippi.

The NEA grant will be matched locally with in-kind assistance,and the effort to restore the building is a joint project of theBrookhaven Trust and the chamber. This part of the work will focuson refurbishing the upstairs section of the chamber building, whichis the old city hall, and the old city fire station, which is alsopart of the historic structure.

Some possibilities discussed include using the refurbished areaas a mini-convention center, meeting rooms and a museum tohighlight the area and its history. The NEA grant will help lay thegroundwork for the restoration and to seek additional grants tocarry it out.

The Brookhaven Trust is always working to make our communitybetter, and we thank the volunteers for their effort. Their hardwork saved Lampton Auditorium, and the rest — as the saying goes– is history, literally. It’s the community’s history, and weappreciate their effort to preserve it.
