Officials reported no injuries after a transmission line leak caused a Brookhaven school bus to smoke up on Monticello Street Wednesday morning.

The incident happened around 7:45 a.m. Bus No. 175, driven by Lawanda Tobias, pulled into the parking lot in the Westbrook Cinema 4 parking lot to evacuate students from the bus.

“The bus driver followed all the precautionary rules and procedures,” said Brookhaven School District Transportation Director Eric Stokes.

Stokes and Brookhaven Fire Department Capt. Ray Allen said a transmission line broke and spilled fluid onto the exhaust. Stokes said there was no actual fire.

Firefighters spread a gravel absorbent to soak up fluid that was still leaking from the bus a short while later.

Stokes said there were 20 students on the bus.

“They had them off the bus and onto another bus by the time we got there,” Allen said. “They were pretty quick.”
