Brookhaven Academy invades Oak Forest

The Brookhaven Academy Cougars are looking to get that first winof the season Friday night when they travel to Oak Forrest inAmite, La. to meet the Yellow Jackets in non-division matchup. Thegame kicks off at 7 p.m.

In other area private school action, Copiah Academy invadesLeake Academy and Parklane Academy travels to CentrevilleAcademy.

Brookhaven, under first-year head coach Herbert Davis, Jr., losta close 14-7 opener to defending Class AA state champ CentrevilleAcademy last Friday. Oak Forest fell to Parklane 35-32 lastweek.

“Oak Forest is definitely good,” said Davis. “They’ve got goodathletic guys. They throw it around a lot, 39 times last week. Theyfind ways to score in the passing game. We have four sophomoresback there in the secondary.”

In the loss to Centreville, Brookhaven wide receiver Tripp Jollysustained a shoulder injury and did not return. Jolly was scheduledto have surgery this week and will miss the remainder of theseason.

“We played good last week against a very good football teamexplained Davis. “To win a championship, you have to get bettereach week. We have to continue to get better.”

Offensively, Brookhaven sophomore quarterback Chandler Rogerscompleted 3 of 8 passes for 67 yards, including a 32-yard touchdownpass to Kyle Burt.

The Cougar ground game was powered by senior running back KolbyByrd with 20 carries for 63 yards. Burt followed with 8 rushes for48 yards.

The Brookhaven defense was led by Byrd with 10 tackles followedby Burt with 7 stops.

“Oak Forest has several receivers that are good,” stated Davis.”Their quarterback throws the ball around pretty good.”

In last year’s matchup, Oak Forest clipped Brookhaven 18-12.

Copiah dropped its season-opener to the host Bowling GreenBuccaneers at Franklinton, La. The Gallman-based Colonels, underScott Cline, were shut out out 42-0.

Last week, Heritage shut out Leake 6-0.

One of the bright moments for Copiah was Bryce Guess picking offa Bowling Green pass in the third quarter.

Last year, Copiah nipped Leake 7-6.

Parklane is 1-0 under new Pioneer head coach Bo Milton. ConnerMize nailed a 23-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to liftParklane to the win over Oak Forest.

Parklane knocked off Centreville Academy 19-14 in last season’scontest.
