The Lincoln County Historical and Genealogical Society will hold “An Afternoon at the Museum” at the Lincoln County Historical and Genealogical Museum and B’nai Sholom Jewish Heritage Museum Tuesday.

The event will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. and celebrate the one-year anniversary of the opening of the historical museum at the corner of South Church and West Chickasaw Streets.

The public is invited to come out and visit the museum and see what has been done in the past year, according to Lincoln County Historical and Genealogical President Tammie Brewer.

“We’ve added many displays and had many items donated from the community in the past year,” said Brewer. “We hope the public comes out and takes a look at what we’ve been working on and the history of Lincoln County.”

A screen will also be playing a video of the 1959 Brookhaven Centennial.

“The film will show many scenes from the centennial, which had a parade and people wearing classic clothing like the early settlers did,” Brewer said.

The recording came from Bonnie Cole’s collection, and was converted from 8 mm tape to DVD format.

Refreshments will be served and entertainment will be provided starting at 4 p.m. by the Brookmont String Plus, a dulcimer musical group from the area.

Brewer said it will not be a formal program as society’s normal meetings are.

“It will be more of a come and go thing,” Brewer said. “We just want people to come in and look at what we’ve done.”

Brewer said if anyone has something to add to the museum, they’d be happy to take it.

“If anyone has anything relevant to Lincoln County history that they’d like to donate, they’re welcome to do so,” said Brewer.

If anyone would like to join the museum, a year’s membership is $20.

The cookbook the society assembled from old recipes from a cookbook from the early 20th Century is still for sale for $15 and will be available at the museum on Tuesday.

Brewer said the society is proud of what they’ve accomplished so far, but still has things going on and things they need.

“Maintenance issues are always ongoing. Any monetary donations that anyone wants to give are always welcome,” said Brewer.

One project the historical society is working on is a way to protect some stained glass windows that are currently not protected from things like rocks from lawnmowers that could damage or destroy them.

“The windows are fabulous and we’d like to get those covered and preserve them,” said Brewer. “The building was built in 1896 and was one of the early buildings constructed in Brookhaven. So we’d like to preserve it in any way possible.”

Brewer said many people in Lincoln County remain unaware of the museum’s presence, something she’d like to see change.

“We want the word to get out that Lincoln County has a historical museum,” said Brewer. “So come on out Tuesday afternoon and join us at the museum.”
