The Rev. Jerry Wilson is one step closer to the job he’s soughtfor years — District One supervisor.

Wilson beat Larry J. Boyd in the Democratic runoff Tuesday andnow faces Republican Joe Jones in the November general election.Wilson polled 1,013 votes, or 59 percent, to 696, or 41 percent,for Boyd, who was making his first run for political office.

In the county’s only other supervisor runoff, District Fiveincumbent Gary Walker beat Bob K. Smith. Walker’s 1,363 gave him 62percent to Smith’s 826, or 38 percent. Walker now faces RepublicanMichael Assink in November.

All totals are complete but unofficial.

Wilson, the current Ward Three alderman in Brookhaven, was aperennial challenger of the late Cliff Givens, the long-timesupervisor. Givens died last year, and his wife, Vedia, is servingout the remainder of his term.

“The people have spoken, and they’re ready for a change,” Wilsonsaid Tuesday night. “I give God all the praise, honor andglory.”

Wilson said he is ready to give up both his city councilposition and his job at Keystone-Seneca to be “a full-timesupervisor.”

With just over two months before the general election, Wilsonsaid his campaign is “ready to take on whoever and be a blessing tothe community.”

Walker, seeking his second term, said he is also looking forwardto the general election.

“I’m happy to be the Democratic nominee for District Five,” hesaid, “and I want to thank my family, especially my wife Pam,friends and supporters.”

One of those congratulating Walker was the Republican Assink,who sat down beside his opponent on a bench at the governmentcomplex.

When asked to predict a November winner, they both smiled.Assink admitted the district is “heavily Democratic.”

“I just enjoy taking part in the process,” Assink said.

Smith issued a statement following the election.

“The Apostle Paul said, ‘I have fought a good fight, I havefinished my course.’ District Five’s majority has spoken, and Icongratulate Gary Walker. I also would like to extend a veryspecial thank you to everyone who supported our efforts to becomesupervisor of District Five. This has not deterred me from mybelief that business management is still the key to LincolnCounty’s growth and future success. ‘That’s my story and I’msticking to it!’ As General MacArthur said ‘I shall return.'”

In the only statewide race on the Democratic ballot, LincolnCountians favored Robert H. “Rob” Smith in the race for statetreasurer. Smith got 4,637 votes, or 53 percent, to 4,064, or 47percent, for Gary Anderson.

On the Republican side in the treasurer’s race, Tate Reevesreceived 258 votes, or 82 percent, to 54, or 18 percent, for WayneBurkes.

For state agriculture commissioner, Max Phillips led a closerace in Lincoln County with 154 votes, or 52 percent, to 143, or 48percent, for Roger D. Crowder.
