Morse second in 2A singles state tourney

RIDGELAND — Loyd Star’s Mindy Morse finished the 2005 tennisseason as Class 2A State Tournament girls singles runner-up. Shedefeated Brittany Harris of Mooreville 7-6, 6-4, in Monday’s firstround at the Bridges Tennis Center.

In the semifinals, Morse rallied and defeated Jennifer Gast ofGulfport St. John, 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, before losing to St. Andrew’sMegan Glorioso in the finals 6-1, 6-1.

St. Andrew’s won the team title with 14 points and Madison St.Joseph was runner-up with 5.

In Class 1A, Natchez Cathedral and Greenville St. Joseph tiedfor the team title with 6 points each. West Lincoln’s Tyler Smithlost in the semifinals of boys singles to eventual state championZack Molin of St. Joe, falling 6-4, 6-4.

In Class 4A, New Albany scored 9 points to edge Pontotoc, Oxfordand Ridgeland which scored 7 points each, for the teamchampionship. It was New Albany’s third straight state title.

In Class 3A, Corinth beat Cleveland 10-6 for the team title. InClass 5A, Northwest Rankin eluded Tupelo 12-11 for the team title.Madison Central was third with 10 points.
