Lady Panthers sweep West Point Green Wave

The Brookhaven Lady Panthers swept the West Point Lady Green Wave in two games with a 6-0 shutout Saturday afternoon at the Lady Panthers Softball Complex.

In Friday’s action, the Lady Panthers drained the Lady Green Wave 17-3 at West Point in five innings of work in the opening round of the MHSAA Class 5A state softball playoffs..

“It was great to sweep the series in two games,” said BHS coach Chad Walker. “The girls came out and made the key plays on offense and defense to capture the victories.”

The Lady Panthers (14-9) return to action Friday to host Lake Cormorant. Brookhaven visits Lake Cormorant Saturday for Game Two and Three, if necessary. Game times have not been set.

West Point, coached by Alan Leonard, concludes their softball season with a 3-16 record.

After a late-night bus ride, the Panthers overcame their tiredness to blank the Lady Green in seven innings of action and advance to the second round of the 5A state playoffs.

Katherine Shell pitched the win for the Lady Panthers with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Abby Turner suffered the loss for West Point with three strikeouts and one walk.

Shell provided the offensive spark to lead Ole Brook’s offense with a double and a single. Katie Grace Culpepper, Shelby Peavey and Shelby Case fueled the flames with a pair of singles. Hitting safely were Taylor Murray and Alycen Speaks.

Jequilia Huggins, Abby Scott, Kaylea Rhea and Alicia Whitherspoon directed the Lady Green Wave offense with a single.

“The girls played hard,” said Leonard. “We had our chances to make this a series but we failed to execute. Brookhaven came out and made the plays offensively and defensively to get the win. I wished them luck in the playoffs.”

Brookhaven did not allow the long bus ride to North Mississippi to hinder their spirits as they drained the Lady Green Wave in five innings of action. They exploded for 11, first-inning runs.

Shell tossed the win for Ole Brook with four strikeouts and four walks.

Turner absorbed the loss for West Point with two strikeouts and seven walks.

Senior catcher Christen Benson was the offensive leader for the Panthers with a triple and a single. Destiny Trevillion, Alycen Speaks, Culpepper and Murray contributed a pair of singles. Tia Bussey, Shell and Peavey hit safely.
