Lady Hornets defeat Bassfield; Yellowjackets edge Loyd Star

BASSFIELD – The Loyd Star Lady Hornets are riding a five-game winning streak after knocking off the Bassfield Lady Yellowjackets 42-28 Tuesday night in Region 7-2A basketball action.

In the boys’ game, the Yellowjackets clipped the Hornets 46-45 on a last second game winning shot by Jamal Peters.

Loyd Star returns home to host their Lincoln/Region rivals the Enterprise Yellow Jackets for four games. The junior varsity girls will tip off at 4 p.m., followed by the junior varsity boys at 5.

Varsity action is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. for the girls and 7:30 for the boys in the nightcap.

Loyd Star 42, Bassfield 28 

The Lady Hornets came out and overpowered Bassfield in the first half to take a 23-16 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Loyd Star continued their hot shooting on offense to outscore the Lady Yellowjackets 19-12 to secure the win.

Junior guard Marcey Givens pumped in 16 points to lead the Lady Hornets’ charge. Jordan chipped in with 11 points and was the leader on the boards with 9 rebounds.

“Offensively, we shot the ball really well,” said Loyd Star coach Gene ‘Moochie’ Britt. “I was very pleased with our defensive effort as we limited them on extra shots opportunities. Overall, I am glad to get the win.”

Deanna Mikell was the top scorer for the Lady Yellowjackets with 12 points.

Bassfield 46, Loyd Star 45 

The Hornets and Yellowjackets provided their basketball fans with an exciting barnburner as both teams fought from start to finish.

In the first half, Loyd Star overcame a sluggish first quarter performance to outscore Bassfield 18-7 in the second quarter to carry a 26-22 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Bassfield fought back into the contest by outscoring Loyd Star 24-19 to edge the Hornets.

In the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, Loyd Star forward Levi Redd nailed a jumper to put the Hornets ahead 45-44 with 3.8 second left, but missed a foul shot to extend the lead. After a time-out by Bassfield, Peters received a long pass down the court and hit the game-winning shot as the buzzer sounded.

Redd was the offensive leader for the Hornets with 18 points. Edrick Alsworth netted 14 points and led on the boards with 7 rebounds. Brad Jasper contributed 10 points.

“This was a classic barnburner matchup,” said Britt. “Redd hit the potential game winning shot to put us ahead in the closing second, but Bassfield got a lucky break to steal the game away form us. Overall, the guys played hard in this tough loss.”

Jamal Peters paced Bassfield’s offense with 14 points. Josh Williams chipped in 10 points.

In junior varsity girls action,  Loyd Star thumped Bassfield 22-10.

Mandy Russell directed the Lady Hornets with 8 points. Kaylea Smith added 7 points.
